With all of the social media sites these days connecting people via Internet, the ideas website creators have are endless. One website in particular that may spark your interest is called Pinterest. Pinterest is a relatively new social media website that allows users to browse through multiple pictures, or ?pins,? varying in content from?32 different categories that it offers. Categories include Do-it-yourself, Fitness, Food & Drink, Photography, Wedding & Events and many others to fulfill any interest group.
The way that Pinterest works is a simple process. People that would like to activate an account request an invite using their e-mail address. The reason a request is necessary is due to the overload of users on the website now, due to popularity. After an invitation is sent, users can choose to connect their account to their Facebook or Twitter account to make an easier and more efficient way to follow their friends and their pins. With Pinterest, you are able to create pinboards in which you can pin pictures you find through your followed friends, or the public category browsing option. You also may add your own photos and links to personal blogs for more information on your interests so others can re-pin your photos. External links are often used when you click on a pin. This redirects the user to another website; a recipe for the dessert you pinned, a website to purchase a product, etc. Once boards are created, users can add as many pictures or pins as they want to so that ideas and pictures can mesh together forming one broad area of interest. When users re-pin a picture, you have to ability to edit the description of a pin so that the web can view your own interpretation of an idea.
Pinterest was founded by Ben Sibermann from West Des Moines, Iowa. It was launched in March 2010. After just nine months, there were over 10,000 users. Pinterest is now based in Palo Alto, California.
Many Pinners? favorite category is the Food & Drink section. This has recipes to creative desserts, appetizers, meals and many more tasty ideas. Seniors Tara Franz and Ashley Falkner whipped up two desserts together.
?We made peanut butter brownies and flourless chocolate cookies,? Franz said.
Along with categories just for fun, useful ideas for organization are also featured. School Librarian Mrs. Thompson uses Pinterest actively for fun, as well for a resource for education. Thompson made multiple signs that benefit the library and teaching visuals.
?We also looked at something that showed different ways to tie a scarf,? Thompson said.
Soon-to-be bride Miss Robinson has looked at the Wedding category to look at inspiration for things like flower arrangements and styles.
Pinterest is not just limited to girls; many things are available for guys too! Although many have become familiar with the website, but not everyone is involved. Make sure to check it out in the future! For now, here is an example of one of the most popular desserts that have got everyone?s mouths watering.
Pinterest's "Cookie-Oreo-Brownie" dessert is a big hit. Start out with 1 box of normal brownie mix, 1 box of oreos, and 2 rolls of cookie dough.

Families Affected By Autism Face Substantial Economic Hardships
Families who have children with disabilities can be overwhelmed both emotionally and financially. Even the most stable of families can face financial hardships due to the extra needs. A new study notes that families that have children with autism spectrum disorders earn an average of 28% less than those that have children with no health limitations.
Zuleyha Cidav PhD and colleagues at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia examined data from the Medical Expenditure Panel Survey which included 261 children with an ASD, 2,921 children with another health condition, and 64,349 children with no health limitations. Overall, families of children with autism earned an average of $17,763 less than those families unaffected by a disability.

For the most part, this was due to one parent ? most often the mother ? who did not work in order to care for the children. Mothers of children with ASD were 6% less likely to work, worked 7 fewer hours and earned 56% less than mothers of healthy, normally developing children. Overall, children with autism were 9% less likely to have both parents working compared to children with no health limitations.
"This is not surprising," write the authors. "The mother is generally the primary caregiver and decision-maker as to where and when healthcare services will be obtained and usually also accompanies the child to care."
What is surprising is that families with autistic children earned less than families of children with other disabilities. This could be due to fewer insurance benefits offered for therapies for children with autism as compared to children with other disabilities.
Historically, Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), for example, has not been covered by most insurance plans. But as time has proven the therapy to be one of the most effective treatments an ASD, and experts such as the US Surgeon General and the American Academy of Pediatrics endorse the therapy, an increasing number of companies are adding the benefit.
Several states have passed autism insurance reform laws, but there are still states that lag behind in approving such bills. A recent Charlotte Observer article notes that North Carolina is one of these states even though the autism rate is above the national rate ? 1 in 97 versus 1 in 110.
"It is time for the North Carolina legislature to follow the lead of neighboring states like South Carolina and Virginia, and pass the autism insurance reform bills which are languishing in committees (House Bill 826 and Senate Bill 115),? write Bridget Mora, Chapter Board Member of the Autism Society of North Carolina and Robert Weiner, former chief of staff of the US House Health Subcommittee and House Aging Committee.
"An estimated 1.5 million Americans have an autism spectrum disorder ? a lifelong developmental disability that affects brain function, emotional development, and social interaction. It affects every facet of daily living, including the ability to communicate, succeed in school, hold a job, maintain friendships, and live independently. "While autism is not curable, it is treatable, especially with early diagnosis and treatment.?
"Given the substantial healthcare expenses associated with ASD (as much as $3.2 million over a lifetime?, concludes Dr. Cidav, ?the economic impact of having lower income in addition to these expenses is substantial. It is essential to design universal healthcare and workplace policies that recognize the full impact of autism."
The Pacer Center (Parent Advocacy Coalition for Educational Rights) was created by parents of children and youth with disabilities to help other families facing similar situations. The organizations offers ?Possibilities?, a financial resource for parents of children with disabilities that can help obtain appropriate services and improve outcomes.

Can I write this off on my taxes?To clarify, the money is not converted to anything at all It is simply taken out of my paycheck and I never see it again. Best answer:

You do not say what the money was converted to? If it was set aside in a 401 (k) plan your taxable wages on your W2 will be less than your wages subject to SS So you will not pay tax on it because it was deferred. It is not a deduction.

Pope pledges to fight "evil" of drugs in Mexico
ABOARD THE PAPAL PLANE (Reuters) - Pope Benedict set out for Mexico on Friday promising to "unmask the evil" of drug trafficking in a country that has been wracked by a surge in gang violence over the past five years.
The pope, who starts his three-day visit in the central city of Leon, gave a forceful response when asked on board his plane about drug trafficking in Mexico, which has unleashed violence claiming some 50,000 lives since 2007.
"We must do whatever is possible to combat this destructive evil against humanity and our youth," he told reporters. "It is the responsibility of the Church to educate consciences, to teach moral responsibility and to unmask the evil, to unmask this idolatry of money which enslaves man, to unmask the false promises, the lies, the fraud that is behind drugs."
The relentless bloodletting was in the mind of many of those waiting to see Benedict in Leon, a Roman Catholic stronghold that has avoided the worst of the brutal turf wars between drug cartels and clashes with security forces.
"The Church has to address the violence, give us a message that there can be change. We are all fed up, our society has been hurt," said Ruben Santibanez, a local doctor.
The pope's strong words on the drug menace should offer comfort to Mexican President Felipe Calderon, who has staked his reputation on beating down the cartels. He will meet the pope.
The government's inability to stem the violence has eroded support for Calderon's conservative National Action Party (PAN) - a group with strong Catholic roots that faces an uphill struggle to retain the presidency in elections in July.
In Leon, hundreds of Catholics dressed in white t-shirts and caps - many of them young people let out of school for the day - lined the streets from early Friday morning to secure prime spots to see the pope pass, cheering at passing cars.
Several followers were hanging a large banner that read "Pope, pray that the violence ends, pray that peace returns."
Others readied campsites to await a massive outdoor mass on Sunday where hundreds of thousands of people are expected.
A survey by polling firm Gabinete de Comunicacion Estrategica (GCE) published in newspaper Milenio on Friday showed 72 percent of respondents wanted the pope to speak out on the security situation in Mexico.
Benedict, who will also travel to Cuba, hopes to rally the faithful in the world's second most populous Catholic nation as more Mexicans are lured to evangelical Protestant churches.
But the German pope faces a challenge generating the same kind of fervor as his charismatic Polish predecessor, Pope John Paul, who was beloved in Latin America and drew pulsating crowds when he criss-crossed the region in his 27-year papacy.
ABUSE SCANDALS
Highlighting the growing religious divisions in Mexico, a large Protestant church in Leon held a service with hundreds of worshippers on Thursday, prominently displaying a sign that read "We are not Roman Catholics.
The Vatican has been stung by accusations of child abuse by priests in parishes around the world - including revelations about Mexican religious leader Marcial Maciel, who founded a prominent Catholic order, the Legionaries of Christ.
Maciel, who died in 2008 at the age of 87, was disgraced by allegations of sexual abuse and drug addiction.
During the pope's visit, religious scholar Bernardo Barranco will present a new book by ex-Legionaries with scores of leaked Vatican documents the authors say prove the Holy See knew about Maciel's molestation of young boys and morphine use for decades.
"The enthusiasm (about the pope's visit) felt in Leon, is not the same in the rest of the country. The abuses by Father Maciel have cast a shadow," Barranco said in an interview.
Benedict has apologized for priest abuse in the past but has no plans to meet with Mexican victims.
The pope heads to Cuba on Monday in a visit meant to bolster the position of the Church there and help the communist island move towards democracy.
Communism, he said on Friday, no longer works in Cuba.

Stores getting a boost from warm weather
NEW YORK (AP) ? Though painful for retailers early on, this winter's warm weather later turned into a boon.
Sales of cold-weather gear were well below expectations, leaving stores with piles of boots and coats and snow shovels to mark down and push out in December and January. But warm-weather items started selling well in February, long before they usually do.
The latest retail sales data from market research firm Planalytics Inc., whose clients include major discounters, department stores and clothing chains, show brisk sales of shorts, live plants and other springtime goods from Feb. 1 through Tuesday. Planalytics uses weather patterns to advise stores what they should buy to sell to customers.
Stores often get a big lift from the arrival of spring, but this year's unusually high temperatures brought that boost sooner than usual. Spring didn't officially begin until Tuesday.
"Warm weather matters more than ever," in this economy, says Scott A. Bernhardt, chief operating officer of Planalytics, which held a conference call Thursday with members of the news media and its retail clients.
It said sales of T-shirts rose 8 percent from a year earlier, while sandals rose 4 percent and sales of shorts rose 6 percent. Live plants have enjoyed a 10 percent gain. The figures compare sales at stores open at least a year, a key indicator of retailers' financial health because it isn't skewed by recent store openings and closings.
Similarly, the International Council of Shopping Centers-Goldman Sachs Weekly Chain Store Index showed Tuesday that revenue at stores open at least a year rose 3.3 percent for the week that ended Saturday. The index includes 24 major stores including Macy's Inc. and Costco Wholesale Corp.
Retailers plan to report April 5 on their sales this March compared with a year earlier. ICSC expects an overall rise of anywhere from 3 percent to 5 percent. A gain of at least 3 percent is considered solid.
Analysts usually look at March and April combined to get a better picture of spending ? in part because of the weather changes but mostly because the Easter and Passover holidays, which can produce significant revenue, shift between the months from one year to the next.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Tebowmania's headed to New York, and the drama has already started for Jets fans.
It began the moment the Jets pulled off the deal for the Broncos quarterback. Or thought they did.
Eight hours and one huge snag later, the trade was on again. But not before the Jets added to the franchise's already lengthy list of embarrassing moments.
Sure, Tebowmania is coming to New York, but it certainly wasn't a smooth deal. And it didn't come without some controversy ? something this Jets season could be filled with the moment Mark Sanchez struggles and restless fans call for Tebow to replace him.
"Mark Sanchez is, has been and will be our starting quarterback," general manager Mike Tannenbaum said on conference call late Wednesday night.
But the Jets have opened themselves ? and Sanchez ? to added pressure by bringing in Tebow. New York recently signed Sanchez to a three-year contract extension after falling out of the hunt for Peyton Manning, a vote of confidence for a quarterback whose pride took a serious shot at the end of last season as the Jets finished 8-8 and out of the playoffs. Some players questioned his leadership abilities, but Sanchez recently vowed to be the guy the franchise can lean on.
Turns out, Rex Ryan's Jets now have two of those guys, including one in Tebow who might automatically be the biggest star in New York right now. Not Sanchez. Not Derek Jeter. Not even Jeremy Lin.
"I'm just excited for him and to see what he does," Lin said in Philadelphia, where the Knicks beat the 76ers. "We'll see what happens next year."
Just a few weeks after "Linsanity" swept New York and the rest of the NBA, "Timsanity" now will take over New York after the Jets acquired the polarizing quarterback and a seventh-round draft pick from the Denver Broncos for fourth- and sixth-round picks.
Hall of Fame quarterback Joe Namath, who led the Jets to their only Super Bowl title in 1969, was among many who were unhappy about the deal.
"I'm just sorry that I can't agree with this situation. I think it's just a publicity stunt. I can't go with it. I think it's wrong," Namath told 1050 ESPN Radio on Wednesday. "I don't think they know what they're doing over there."
The trade was completed hours after the sides initially agreed to a deal, which was hung up when the Jets balked at repaying Denver more than $5 million for a salary advance due Tebow. The two sides agreed to split that cost, and Tannenbaum said the team was "comfortable with the compensation."
He said there was a disagreement about how to handle the salary advance after Denver received the papers.
"We knew what the contract was," he said. "We had read it. ... We felt it was one way; they felt it was another. Based on that, they were well within their rights to assess their different possibilities of what to do and their alternatives. And they did so throughout the day."
So the Jets waited and waited ? and looked as if they had botched the big deal.
Despite ultimately pulling off the trade, it's just another bizarre moment for the Jets, conjuring memories of Bill Belichick's hiring as coach and his resignation one day later.
"I'm thankful they stuck with me through this whole crazy process," Tebow said, repeating several times that he was "excited" to be a member of the Jets.
But the deal also raised questions about the Jets' commitment to Sanchez, who received a $40.5 million contract extension, with $20.5 million guaranteed, earlier this month. During a call late Wednesday night, Tannenbaum repeatedly referred to Sanchez as "our guy" and the team's unquestioned starting quarterback.
"We obviously know that Tim has a magnetic following," Tannenbaum said. "We understand the popularity of the backup quarterback, and this one is more unique than others."
Tebow said he had a "great conversation" on Wednesday with Sanchez, adding that they've been friends for several years. He said he's not here to take Sanchez's job, but to help him as a unique addition to the offense, someone who could run Tony Sparano's wildcat package ? and anything else they ask him to do.
"My goal is to push (Sanchez) to get better, and to push myself to get better every day," Tebow said. "But I think we'll have a great working relationship. We'll have a great relationship off the field, and we've had that the last few years. He's such a classy guy and handles himself so well, and I'll be very honored to call him my teammate."
Defensive end Mike DeVito is excited about the intangible qualities Tebow will offer.
"You've got a tough player on the field, a leader in the locker room and a guy who shares the faith that I share," DeVito said. "So, I'm very grateful to have him on our team, and I feel it's going to really benefit us as a whole."
But, like Namath, not everyone's a fan.
Cornerback Antonio Cromartie, took to Twitter on Wednesday to express his confidence in Sanchez and the offense as structured before the deal was finalized.
"Y bring Tebow in when we need to bring in more Weapons for (at)Mark_Sanchez," Cromartie tweeted. "Let's build the team around him. We already signed to 3 year ext."
The Jets signed Drew Stanton last week to be their No. 2 quarterback, ahead of Greg McElroy, the team's seventh-round draft pick last year. Tannenbaum said Tuesday that he was confident in the trio, but on Wednesday acknowledged that the team would assess that situation and that Tebow was Sanchez's clear backup.
Regardless, the Jets sure got the headlines and were the talk of sports radio ? even on a day when the New Orleans Saints received unprecedented punishment from the NFL for a bounty system that rocked the football world. Head coach Sean Payton was suspended without pay for next season, and former defensive coordinator Greg Williams, now with St. Louis, was banned indefinitely.
But even all that couldn't overshadow another embarrassing episode for a franchise that has had to explain away several missteps in recent years.
The Jets are hoping Tebow can help change all that.
He led the Broncos to the playoffs last season ? along the way beating Sanchez and the Jets, who missed the postseason. But Denver executive John Elway believed Manning gave the team a better chance at winning a championship now. For the Jets, Tebow adds a unique dimension to the offense.
"It is very clear: They want me to come in and compete and get better, and get better as a quarterback and to help the team any way possible," Tebow said. "Whatever that role is, I will do my best."
Tebow also provides a solid presence in a locker room that was rife with infighting last season ? particularly between Sanchez and wide receiver Santonio Holmes. He also brings with him a flock of fervent fans for reasons that have to do as much with his faith as his football skills. A devout Christian, he's been a role model since his days at Florida, when he led the Gators to two national titles and captured the Heisman Trophy.
Denver started shopping Tebow after signing Manning, and the Jets were considered a long shot as late as Tuesday night. But New York went hard after Tebow.
As part of Tebow's $11.25 million, five-year contract he signed as a rookie in 2010, he had a $6.277 million advance due 29 days after the start of the 2011 league year. That money was paid to him in August after the NFL lockout ended. The trade stalled over the payment the Jets would owe the Broncos from that advance.
That allowed Jacksonville to get back into the hunt, and it came down to the Jaguars and Jets.
"I think we have a duty to consider all avenues of improving the Jaguars on and off the field, especially given the unique circumstances involving the player," Jaguars owner Shahid Khan said in a statement. "I am very satisfied with the outcome."
Tebow said, contrary to some reports, he didn't have final say in where he was going.
"Ultimately, I really didn't have any because the Broncos had all that power," Tebow said, adding that Denver was "gracious" in the way it handled the process. "I was just kind of watching and waiting ? kind of like everybody else.
"It was an interesting day."

Eric Prindle wins Bellator tournament title without a fight
Eric Prindle won Bellator's heavyweight tournament, which includes a $100,000 prize and a shot at Bellator heavyweight champion Cole Konrad. Prindle did this without having to step in the cage for a rematch of his final with Thiago Santos.
How did this happen? In the latest of weird bumps in the road between the two competitors, Santos missed weight by 12 lbs. With Santos so far over the heavyweight limit of 265 lbs, the fight was called off, and Prindle was declared the winner of the tournament.
Last week, their fight was delayed after Prindle came down with the flu. In November, they met in the cage for their first attempt at a final. That bout was declared a no contest when Santos threw an illegal kick to Prindle's groin.
Prindle got to the final with a decision win over Abe Wagner and a 40-second knockout of Ron Sparks. He will now face Konrad at a later date to challenge for the Bellator heavyweight belt.

Getting divorced at a young age is traumatic, but one can still start afresh and find love again
Recently, playback singer Sunidhi Chauhan announced her engagement to music composer Hitesh Sonik after a courtship of about two years. The 28-year-old says, she looks forward to being married and starting a new life with her fiance. This, however, isn?t the first time Sunidhi has been down the aisle. Deeply infatuated and dedicated, she married her first love Bobby Khan at the young age of 18. Conflicting personalities and imbalanced expectations soon took their toll and the marriage didn?t last for more than a year. It took Sunidhi 10 years of living life on her own terms and continuing to be optimistic about love to find Hitesh.
That hurts
The end of a marriage at any age is a traumatic experience, but it can be exceptionally painful if the couple isn?t tempered by relationships and maturity. The heady rush of love that seems all-consuming has the strength to sway youngsters in their late teens and early 20s into making life-long commitments. By the time the implications are realised, it?s often too late and the rift is irreversible. At the end of such a relationship, people are too scarred to give their love lives another chance and spend years trying to get over the emotional turmoil of their decision.
Don?t rush in
For 28-year-old entrepreneur Tara Kaushal, love-marriage was a fairytale concept she bought into at the age of 19. Marrying young, she braved the concerns of her parents to take a plunge she soon realised she wasn?t ready for. ?My ex was 11 years older than me. At the time, the choices given to us were to either get married or break up. At 19, choosing to break up was a much harder call to take than to get married. We were in love. And he fit the right parameters ? good schooling, right job, the works,? she says, ?but I knew I didn?t want it when I got in. It wasn?t the life I wanted.? Their differences took a toll on the relationship and the two separated within three years.
According to Clinical psychologist Varkha Chulani, the biggest mistake people make when marrying young is to assume that it will last forever and focus on superficial reasons. She says, ?It?s not your hobbies that need to match, but your attitudes.? For Kaushal, the realisation of the fairytale being flawed was hard to accept. ?At that age, one doesn?t have the understanding and experience of how relationships work in the real world. Everything was so disappointing. My biggest fear was that I might never be able to feel so ?in-love? again,? she says. ?Those looking at an early marriage should keep love and lust at bay and come up with a value checklist,? says Chulani.
Know yourself better
It?s always easier to make it work with someone who is similar. Try and analyse the nature and temperament of your partner and test them in different social situations such as with your parents, friends etc. See how they rise to the occasion instead of just meeting over romantic dinners. Acknowledging that a relationship isn?t working is a hard call to take. And when the couple in love is young, it?s often a debilitating experience. ?Upon my family?s insistence, I did try to go back and work things out once or twice, but I knew it wouldn?t work out. He wasn?t a bad guy, just the wrong one,? says Kaushal. Post-separation trauma is often accompanied with the social stigma that people still associate with divorces. Chulani says, this transition period is essential to regroup with oneself. Take the time to understand yourself better and let yourself heal. ?The most common mistake people make is to generalise the situation and say all men are jerks or all women are nags. Learn to access your contribution in the failure of the marriage. But be sure to attribute it to your error of judgement and naivety,? she says.
A new beginning
For Kaushal, the transition was eased as she moved to Mumbai to start afresh. ?While it was initially very traumatic, I never gave up on love. I came to the city very optimistic. Soon, I found a friend in Sahil who over two years became my closest friend. He knew my history and was never intimidated by it. We got married a month ago and I couldn?t be happier,? says Tara.
According to Chulani, it?s essential to test and season your love. Put it through the test of time and see how it pans out. The danger of falling back in love is often as people are in denial of what caused the first relationship to drift apart and tend to make the same mistake, fall for the same personality type again without making amends. She says, ?It?s critical to selfevaluate and be sure of what one wants in a partner. Being vague about it is often what causes most relationships to unfurl. Learn to handle your baggage smartly instead of drowning every relationship under it.?

Improving L&D capability lies at the heart of the Learning Caf? ? the changing scope of L&D in our organisations and the underlying skills required to help L&D realise the opportunities that we are constantly faced with.
As Martyn Sloman notes in the L&D 2020 Report, ?The new context in which today?s L&D professional operate demands both a new mindset and a new skill set.? (Sloman, 2010, p8). In particular, L&D is no longer a ?trainer-centric activity? that occurs in a classroom. It?s about ?developing, through sustained activity that takes place in a variety of contexts and involves a range of people with different roles, the individual knowledge and skills that deliver better value products to the ultimate consumer or client.? (Sloman, 2010,p 1).
Inevitably, the skills required to assess and support improved performance within particular organisational contexts through learning are changing. The five sessions in this workstream each sought to better understand the nature of those skills and how they might be acquired by L&D professionals today.
Skill set for the Future: Peter Hall
This session set the framework for most of the day. Drawing on a presentation provided to the AITD, Peter described one particular framework for thinking about the skill set required for L&D professionals:

Jeevan Joshi then took just one of the skills outlined in Peter?s session for deeper examination: if L&D is to be truly aspire to a strategic business partnership with management then how do we ensure that our L&D team is acquiring the business acumen required? What does ?business acumen? even mean in this context?
Whilst participants agreed that business acumen was not required of every L&D role, we agreed that our credibility and relevance depended on a minimum understanding of our businesses? success formula?. Only by knowing what the business was trying to achieve and through what levers might we be in a position to make recommendations about how and why this would be achieved.
The group went on then to consider how best to build that knowledge base in the L&D team and considered different options: a specific curriculum which might be incorporated into an accreditation process or required qualification for L&D (see discussion below for Professionalising L&D in Australia); immersive experiences, for example, through secondments or shadowing within parts of the business; or by recruiting those from within the business who already had that base level of understanding.

This session provided participants with an opportunity to understand the changing nature of L&D from a slightly different perspective: what are the kinds of qualifications and attributes being actively sought by our organisations when recruiting L&D professionals? What does this tell us about the changing nature of the skills being sought? And at a time of downsizing and restructuring in many organisations, how might we repackage our existing skills for greatest relevance in the current market?
Rhys confirmed that, as a recruiter specialising in the field of L&D, he was not seeing any common language for L&D job titles and that a large part of his role was working with organisations to help them understand their needs. Looking beyond a job title is important in this kind of market and demands that candidates understand exactly what people in a particular organisation do every day, what are the activities they are engaged in and how then a learning professional can assist them to do that better?
One participant attributed his success in finding new roles to three factors:
- being clear about his value to an organisation
- be prepared ?not to be precious? about his skill set and
- framing his skills in terms of the business need, for example, ?I?m a customer service person who just happens to provide learning?
Professionalising L&D in Australia: Nicola Atkinson
This session took as its starting point the broad range of skills and backgrounds currently enjoyed by many L&D professionals (including education, change management, HR, psychology etc). It asked whether the reputation of the profession demanded greater control over its members.
Whilst it was agreed that there was no ?burning platform? for greater control (in the form of, for example, a body of complaints about the standard of L&D professionalism), we agreed that the development of a framework for accreditation or qualification provided a useful opportunity to examine the skills required of L&D professionals and also to support their continuing professional development.
It also opened up an important discussion about the relative value of specialisation versus generalisation within the profession: should we be demanding that all L&D professionals are skilled in instructional design, facilitation, e-learning, collaborative learning, change management, performance analysis, organisational development, business system analysis and organisational communication ? ?or is there room for specialisation within the field?
In the time permitted, no agreement was reached about the best way forward except to the extent that it was agreed that it would be worth looking at other models such as that provided by the Standards Australia Coaching Guidelines 2011.
L&D in HR: Pierre de Villiers
This session proved by far the most difficult (perhaps also coming at the end of an intense and highly engaging program!). Pierre facilitated a debate between the two groups of participants on the question of whether L&D should sit in HR or in the business. For many in L&D, this is a perennial question which plays out every day as they are pulled first one way by their central L&D function, determined to drive change in an organisation through the roll out of a consistent set of models, language and messages and then by a specific business unit which needs to respond quickly and nimbly to learning needs as they arise.
There was a strongly held view that if organisations are to maximise the return on their investment in their people, L&D must sit in HR. Working closely with HR, L&D is able to augment the processes which have been established to support development and progression of people within the organisation.
The difficulty for L&D however is that its place in HR often means that less time can be afforded to its concerns for the business. In many organisations, there is only so much time which the HR function is able to get from the business and L&D is only one of the HR issues which must be considered.
Moreover, as L&D builds a focus on ?performance?, rather than ?development?, its ability to provide value will depend on its ability to respond quickly and relevantly ? which then sees it placed in the business and leads us nicely back to our starting point: the role and skill set required of Learning and Development at this particular point in time.
