Chinese Authorities Shoot Down Videogame Rumor

This game is over before it even started. China's Ministry of Culture said that it is not considering lifting the nation's ban on videogame consoles. Reports that China might lift its ban on systems like Microsoft's Xbox 360 and Sony's PlayStation surfaced last week. However, that story appears to be false.

Wedding Dress Decisions ? 32022th Edition

(Much better than Wedding Dress Nightmares)

From the very beginning, I had a dress preference from the six I originally liked. But first let?s look at the ones I didn?t choose.

Wedding Dress Decisions : wedding greenville wedding dress Bettina Bettina

Image via J. CREW

The Bettina was beautiful, but not exactly what I was looking for in a wedding dress, mainly because I couldn?t see myself walking down the aisle with any jewelry or a veil with it. The neckline doesn?t lend itself to a necklace, and I feel like in a veil I would just be completely covered from toe to forehead. So for me, that one was out.

Wedding Dress Decisions : wedding greenville wedding dress Sararos Sararos

Image via J. CREW

Mr. Lemur was actually the one to veto the Sararose and Sinclair dresses, which was fine with me! I was glad he had input, and neither of these dresses really stood out to me.

I also should note that I?m not the typical ?look for the dress and cry when you find it? bride. In some ways I wish I were! It seems so romantic and classic. But I have yet to feel that at all in my planning process, and I don?t know if I will.

I guess in the end it just came down to availability, price, and what I could actually see myself wearing on my wedding day. I went to a local J. CREW store (not a J. CREW bridal store, the nearest one is Atlanta) and tried on a few dresses to size myself. I?m consistently the same J. CREW size, so I felt fairly safe ordering online without trying on the actual dress.

Wedding Dress Decisions : wedding greenville wedding dress Sophia Sophia

Image via J. CREW

So here we go. The J. CREW Sophia. My number one choice from the beginning for several reasons?the simplicity of the dress, the way it fits with my style, and being able to feel comfortable and like myself on my wedding day. I also like that I can make this dress my own! I haven?t decided how yet. I?m considering a chunky necklace for the reception, maybe fancy drop earrings, a sash, flowers in my hair/on the sash, or really anything that I want. Because of the simplicity of the dress, I can do whatever I want with my accessories!

A few things?as of my purchase, the Sophia was no longer sold on the J. CREW website (I think it may be back now). Which is fine, since I knew I would be able to find the dress cheaper elsewhere anyway! I found it on RecycledBride?not my size. Again, here it is on PreOwnedWeddingDresses?this one is my size, but sold, obviously. These are just a few of the sites I checked! There are plenty of places to buy gently used or even new with tags wedding dresses that aren?t full price.

These pictures and dresses are also all showing the dress in silk tricotine. J. CREW originally made the dress in both silk chiffon and silk tricotine. After looking at pictures of both online, I decided I wanted the dress in silk chiffon. It seems like most women buy silk tricotine, but since I was looking to have a casual ceremony and reception, I felt like silk chiffon would be a better fit.

I did eventually find the dress online and buy it?yes, without ever trying it on! It came a few days later and fit perfectly! It does need alterations in length, but I haven?t decided what I?m wearing for shoes yet. I bought for my current size, not a size down, but that was right before the holidays so I probably should try it on again just to be sure?

I keep looking for pictures of brides wearing this dress but there aren?t very many out there in my style and size. I took a few horrible pictures of myself the first time I tried it on, but you?re going to have to wait until I can take some slightly less embarrassing shots! And since this post is long enough already, we?ll talk about the details of my dress the next time around.

Did you wear a J. Crew dress on your wedding day? Are you considering buying a pre-owned dress?

Mystery of Lost Homing Pigeons Finally Solved

The mystery of how homing pigeons are able to navigate home may have been solved. The birds use low-frequency sound waves to make a mental map of their location, new research suggests.

The findings, published today (Jan. 30) in the Journal of Experimental Biology, may shed light on why the normally amazing navigators sometimes get completely lost: the low-frequency waves from their current location don't reach their home loft.

Four-decade mystery

In 1969, a Cornell biology professor gave a talk to geologists at the school about the mystery of the lost homing pigeons. If the pigeons were taken to almost any locations, they headed straight home with amazing accuracy. But at one location, called Jersey Hill, the pigeons got completely lost, with each taking off in a random direction. At two other locations, the birds consistently headed in the same wrong direction. On a few trips, the birds would miraculously make it home, but then get lost the next day. [The 10 Weirdest Animal Discoveries]

United States Geological Survey geologist John Hagstrum heard the talk, and the question nagged at him for years. In the 1990s, he discovered that birds in European pigeon races were going astray on clear-weather days, when the Concord, the supersonic plane, was in the area. That led him to wonder whether the sonic boom from the Concorde plane disrupted pigeon navigation by interfering with the sound waves.

Prior research had shown that birds hear incredibly low-frequency sound waves of about 0.1 Hertz, or a tenth of a cycle per second. These infrasound waves may emanate from in the ocean and create tiny disturbances in the atmosphere. Hagstrum began to think the birds used infrasound for navigation.

"If that sound in the Earth is coupling through the topography, then maybe the birds are actually sort of seeing, or imaging, their topography around their loft acoustically," he told LiveScience.

Vast dataset

To test the idea that pigeons use infrasound to make an acoustic map of home, he used a computer program to model the emanation of infrasound waves from 200 sites around Cornell University where about 45,000 pigeons had been released over a 14-year period. He then compared sound wave location data with information on whether the pigeons had made it home.

Hagstrum found that on the days when the pigeons got lost, the infrasound waves from Jersey Hill didn't reach their home loft at Cornell. Even more interesting, on the odd day when the birds reached home from Jersey Hill without problems, the infrasound traveled between the two locations. At the other locations where pigeons headed off in the wrong direction, he showed that wind currents channeled the infrasound waves in that direction.

The explanation may solve other mysteries about pigeons ? for instance, why they circle around before heading off in one direction. Because the sound waves are so long, but the birds' ear canals are tiny, they need to circle to reconstruct the wave and figure out which way they are oriented, he said.

"It's a very interesting and provocative idea," said Charles Walcott, a neurobiologist at Cornell University, who was not involved in the study.

While the findings are very convincing, Walcott told LiveScience, the ultimate test will be to set the birds loose in new locations where infrasound from their home loft doesn't reach, and see if they still get lost.

(AP) ? The owner of a nightclub in southern Brazil where more than 230 people died in a fire last weekend deflected blame to "the whole country," as well as to architects and inspectors charged with making sure the building was safe, his lawyer said Wednesday.

Attorney Jader Marques said his client, Elissandro Spohr, "regretted having ever been born" because of his grief over the fire, but still blamed Sunday's tragedy on "a succession of errors made by the whole country."

Police investigating the blaze have said it likely started when a country music band performing at the Kiss nightclub in the college town of Santa Maria lit a flare, which ignited flammable soundproofing foam on the ceiling. That initial error was compounded by the near-total lack of emergency infrastructure such as a fire alarms or sprinkler systems, police have said. The club also had only one working door and a faulty fire extinguisher.

Marques insisted in a phone interview with The Associated Press that "my client's responsibility is having trusted too much in the inspectors and in those responsible for the construction."

"Hindsight is 20-20," he said, stressing that public officials had signed off on the club.

The number of injured jumped to 143 Wednesday after 22 people were admitted to hospitals with respiratory problems after having escaped the club apparently unharmed. Brazil Health Minister Alexandre Padilha has urged the fire's survivors to remain alert for any symptoms of so-called "chemical pneumonia," which can take up to three days to develop following exposure to toxic fumes and smoke.

The blaze also claimed another life late Tuesday, raising the death toll to 235, as a 21-year-old man with burns covering 70 percent of his body succumbed to his wounds. Brazilian media reported that the man's brother was also killed in the fire.

Police detained Spohr, the club's other co-owner and two musicians who were playing in the club when the fire broke out, and are holding them for five days as part of the investigation. Spohr is in police custody at a hospital in a nearby town, where he's recovering from a respiratory infection and is said to be suffering from depression.

Lilian Caus, one of the officers watching Spohr, said he had made a suicidal gesture, removing a shower hose and tying it to a bathroom window Tuesday.

"By the way it was tied it looked like he wanted to use it to hang himself by the neck, but he didn't even use it," Caus said. "There seems to have been the intention to use it."

Marques denied reports that overcrowding helped cause Sunday's tragedy, insisting there were only 600 to 700 people in the club at any one time. Capacity for the 615-square-meter (6,650-square-foot) nightspot stood at less than 700, though the band's guitarist told media that the space was packed with an estimated 1,200 to 1,300 people. Police have given the same estimate.

Marques insisted that any higher tallies of people at the club that night were due to club-goers cycling in and out.

The tragedy raised questions about the reliability of safety regulations in a nation set to host the World Cup and Olympic Games. Documents obtained by The Associated Press, including past building and fire safety plan permits issued to the club, showed that the single exit, the foam insulation and other contributors to the tragedy didn't violate laws.

"Do I agree with the fact that there was only one exit? No," said Maj. Gerson Pereira, an inspector with the local fire department. "Do I agree that the roof was covered with flammable material? No, I don't. I would have liked to shut down this place, but then the firefighters could be sued" because no law had been broken.

The same documents show that other regulations were broken, including irregularities in the fire safety inspection of the club, as well as pyrotechnics used by the band that police say should not have been set off indoors. Police inspectors say any of the violations was reason enough to shut the club down.

One document shows the club had already been labeled by fire officials a "medium" risk for a fire. By state law, that designation requires the club undergo annual inspections, but records show that the last inspection took place in August 2011.

Survivors have said the club's fire extinguishers failed to work in early attempts to battle the blaze. Under state law, an extinguisher must have a receipt showing that it had been independently inspected within a year.

Marcelo Arigony, the lead police investigator in the case, said Tuesday that it was clear the fire extinguishers had not been inspected and that they were clearly cheap models that should not be used anywhere.

"It's not that this club was working to come within this or that law ? the place should have never been open in the first place," Arigony said. "This is a problem that is seen across Brazil, these laws. I can only hope this tragedy brings about change."

Jaime Moncada, a U.S.-based fire-safety consultant with nearly three decades experience in Latin America including large projects in Brazil, said he was not surprised that one exit was permissible under local law.

Shown a blueprint of the club obtained by the AP, he calculated that the farthest point from the front door was 105 feet (32 meters), and regulations in most Brazilian states dictate that a second exit is required only if the distance is 131 feet (40 meters) or more.

For the same reason of distance, Moncada said sprinklers and alarms would not be required.

"For an American audience, it is crazy to think that a place would have only one exit," he said.

In Brazil, he added, that would be the norm.

Amid the shock of what was the world's deadliest nightclub fire in a decade, changes in Brazil seemed on the horizon.

In Brasilia, the nation's capital, lawmakers in the lower house worked on a proposal that would require federal safety minimum standards across Brazil. Now states individually create such laws. The newspaper O Globo reported on its website that the mayor's office in Santa Maria ordered all nightclubs closed for 30 days while inspections are carried out.

Elsewhere, the government of the country's biggest city, Sao Paulo, set to host the opening match of the 2014 World Cup, promised tougher security regulations for nightclubs.

Outraged citizens in Santa Maria are demanding change.

Elise Parode, an 18-year-old student taking part in a protest before City Hall, chanted with all her might along with about 500 others, pushing up against the door of the building as municipal guards kept them from entering.

"We want justice! We want the government held accountable, just like the owners of the bar!" she yelled as the crowd around held aloft poster-size photos of the fire's victims. "Our own government doesn't know the laws ? we're not safe until they do."

DNA-repairing protein may be key to preventing recurrence of some cancers

Jan. 28, 2013 ? Just as the body can become resistant to antibiotics, certain methods of killing cancer tumors can end up creating resistant tumor cells. But a University of Central Florida professor has found a protein present in several types of cancer, including breast and ovarian cancer, which could be helpful in preventing tumors from coming back.

The protein, KLF8, appears to protect tumor cells from drugs aimed at killing them and even aid the tumor cells' ability to regenerate.

"All cells have a DNA-repair mechanism," explained Jihe Zhao, a medical doctor and researcher who in the past few months has published several articles related to the protein in the Journal of Biological Chemistry and Oncogene, among others. "That's why we survive constant DNA damage threats. But KLF8 is overexpressed in specific cancers, such as breast cancer and ovarian cancer. The thought is that if we can stop it from switching on, we may be able to stop the tumors from coming back as part of therapy. We still need to do a lot more research, but it is plausible.

There are between 2.5 million and 2.7 million women who have breast cancer in the United States and 10 to 20 percent will experience a recurrence, according to the American Cancer Society. Current treatment options, depending on the stage of cancer, include surgical removal followed by chemotherapy using a combination of cancer killing drugs. Each year about 22,200 women are also diagnosed with ovarian cancer.

DNA damage-based chemotherapies depend on failure of cancer cells to repair the DNA damage and subsequent cell death, according to the journal article. Aberrant high levels of DNA repair function in the cells likely increase not only the resistance of the cells to such therapies but also the malignancy of the cells due to improper DNA repair-mediated genomic and chromosomal instability.

In the study, Zhao's team tested one specific cancer-fighting drug used in the treatment of breast cancer to determine the role of the protein.

"Indeed, our results have clearly linked the KLF8-promoted DNA repair to the cell resistance to doxorubicin-induced cell death," Zhao said. "It remains to be determined whether KLF8 plays a similar role in repairing DNA damage caused by other types of genotoxic agents such as DNA alkylating agents and ionizing radiation."

Even so, the results suggest that in addition to enhancing the drug resistance of the cancer cells, KLF8 could play a role in disturbing genomic integrity through its aberrant DNA repair function and subsequently contribute to aggressive progression of cancer.

New Android apps worth downloading: MyScript Calculator update, Hushed, Ikaruga

With MyScript Calculator you can write math problems on the touchscreen rather than typing them in, making it highly intuitive and natural to use. Next is Hushed, an app for creating temporary phone numbers. Finally, bullet hell game Ikaruga fires a crazy amount of mayhem your way.

What?s it about? Simply put, MyScript Calculator is a calculator app that recognizes handwriting, allowing you to write out equations that the app can solve using your device?s touch screen.

What?s cool? It?s pretty obvious, isn?t it? Imagine writing down a math problem on a piece of paper, only to have the problem solve itself. MyScript takes the workings of a calculator out of using a calculator, allowing you to do so much more naturally just by writing. The update to the app is pretty huge, adding a lot of higher-level mathematics, like trigonometry. You can also fix mistakes by using the redo and undo buttons.

Who?s it for? If you find yourself solving math problems, either for school or just everyday life, MyScript Calculator can help.

What?s it like? Pick up RealCalc Scientific Calculator for a more traditional approach to calculating.

What?s it about? Hushed allows you to make calls and send texts from your Android device from disposable numbers, allowing you to hide your real number and protect your information should you ever lose your phone.

What?s cool? You can give out a Hushed number to a new acquaintance or someone you?re considering dating, then dispose of the number if the person turns out to be a creeper. You also can attach numbers to Android devices and use them for as long as you like, allowing you to make calls from a preferred area code or what have you. Each number has voice mail and SMS attached, so you?ll get all the features you would with a normal phone number.

Who?s it for? If you?re the kind of person who has to give out their phone number a lot, use Hushed for an extra layer of security.

What?s it like? Both Ghost Phone and Extra Phone Number offer similar services to Hushed.

What?s it about? Making the jump from Xbox Live Arcade to Android, Ikaruga brings its crazy ?bullet-hell? shooter action to the small screen.

What?s cool? In addition to gorgeous graphics and frantic shooter action, Ikaruga has a mechanic that helps set it apart. Incoming fire is all either red or blue, and you can use the corresponding color?s shield to neutralize the attacks. That means you?ll be dodging fire and strategically switching colors back and forth to avoid damage.

Who?s it for? Arcade shooter fans, Ikaruga is one of those big games that?s worth your attention.

What?s it like? There are even more bullets to be dodged in Shogun and Danmaku Death.

Mophie Juice Pack for Galaxy S3.

The Mophie Juice Pack for the Galaxy S3 doubles your phone's battery life - but at quite the cost in this case

I have no qualms about admitting my lust for the iPhone's Mophie Juice Pack battery case. My wife's used one with her iPhone, and it's a great combination of extra juice and protection in a form factor that doesn't kill the overall feel of the phone. We've looked at a couple of Galaxy S3 battery cases here before -- the Powerskin Battery Case and the Droidax Power Pack. Neither of them were bad cases, but neither of them had the name recognition and legacy of Mophie.

So now that we've got a Mophie for the GS3 in our hot little hands, how's it shaking out? Read on for the full skinny.

Poor Sleep Prevents Brain From Storing Memories

I like to follow these types of stories. I lost all of my memory one morning when I was 19. The cause isn't clear. I was in an underdeveloped country at the time, so the medical facilities didn't exist to determine what had happened. (It might have been a delayed effect of a car accident I was in two years earlier.) It's also probably important to note that my ability to form new memories was also severely impeded.

I wonder a little bit about what "moving" a memory means. At least in my amateur study, memories aren't complete entities (like a file, database, etc). They are mixes of memories, the awareness of what has occurred, and associations, our integration of what we already know with what we are remembering. That's part of the reason people can have such differing memories of a shared experience. Some of that is about how memories are retrieved. In my study and experience, they are retrieved by these associations we make. That's why memory tricks involve making varied associations -- to song, to a mental or physical image, etc. For people who haven't learned those tricks, an association can be as simple as "I remember we met in a bar..." then the rest of the picture is pieced together.

I wonder sometimes if my having to learn different ways of "remembering" things will allow me to maintain a higher level of memory functioning into my elder years. I have to be very aware and purposeful about what I remember. I was in college when I lost my memory, so I had to learn very quickly how to perform in school without being able to learn in the conventional sense (I could not remember the beginning of a semester by the time it ended). So I focused much more on the integration of memories into my existing awareness (aka forming associations between new experiences and prior knowledge.) I still have a very poor memory retrieval in the classic sense, but I can still learn lessons well. It has just required a much higher level of sentience with regards to how memories are stored and what I hope to gain from a memory in the long term.

Doing business with pleasure : Postnoon

Doing-business-with-pleasure-postnoon-news

If you want to catch a break from the hustle and bustle of city life, a peacefully sinful business lunch at Tre-Forni, Park Hyatt Hotel?s authentic Italian restaurant, is your best bet.

Walking into a five-star hotel in the middle of the day might feel like a bit much on a weekday for most of us. Limited by time and worried about the subsequent hole in the pocket are some of the probable factors that would hold us back from gratifying our food cravings at that time of the day.

Park Hyatt?s authentic Italian restaurant Tre-Forni, on the other hand, is an exception. The Monday-Friday business lunch at the Italian restaurant is a perfect combination of a pocket-friendly indulgence coupled with prompt service. Promising delicacies from the heart of Italy, Chef Matteo Grandi delivers his best to the foodies in Hyderabad. ?Our aim is to create authentic Italian dishes for our customers. Unlike other Italian restaurants in the City, we do not Indianise the taste of our food. Our objective is to bring true Italian flavours to the Indian palette,? says Chef Grandi, adding that takers for real Italian cuisine in the City are consistently growing in number. ?While we do have the occasional customer who doesn?t understand the true cuisine and dislikes what we do, most who come to Tre-Forni expect non-Indianised Italian food,? he said.

baby-octopus-postnoon-news

From its in-house breads to fresh leafy salads, Tre-Forni is one of the few places in the City that lives up to its Italian promise. The newly introduced Monday-Friday business lunch at the restaurant offers a variety of Italian delicacies that are enjoyable in the afternoon. A three-course set menu, at `1,000 plus taxes, includes salads, soups, a main course, desserts and a tea or coffee at the end of the meal. Another interesting aspect of the lunch is an in-house drink ? the Orange Theory. As part of the set menu, you can have as many Orange Theories as you like. While the drink is only one among other mocktails and soft drinks that the restaurant offers, it is certainly the best.

The starter or antipasti includes three variations of the very Italian bruschetta ? mushroom, tomato and olive and chicken. The salad or insalata also offers a variety of three leafy and colourful indulgences ? insalata misti, baby octopus salad and the vegetarian salad. While the mushroom bruschetta is a must-have from the antipastis, your business lunch would remain incomplete without the insalata misti. You can also dig into the evenly-flavoured baby octopus salad to gratify your slightly exotic appetite. Among the main course pastas, an appetising variety, the lamb ravioli is by far the best. While the homemade ravioli retains the softness of the minced lamb, the cheesiness of the white sauce makes the dish an absolute delight. Another thing worth mentioning here is its presentation. In fact, the neatness with which the six to seven pieces of ravioli filled with minced lamb are arranged makes you?sigh a little before devouring the pretty dish.

Like an authentic Italian meal, the business lunch at Tre-Forni, too, ends on a sinful sugary note. While the menu does include some of the best?from the heart of Italy like?panna cotta, Tre-Forni?s tiramisu is to die for.

PFT: Moss won't retire after Super Bowl

Kyle Rudolph PicGetty Images

After the NFC jumped out in front 10-7 in the Pro Bowl?s initial 16 minutes, Chiefs linebacker Derrick Johnson briefly returned the lead to the AFC by reading Giants quarterback Eli Manning?s eyes in zone coverage and picking off Eli?s pass, which was intended for Vikings tight end Kyle Rudolph.

Johnson beat everyone to the house for a 42-yard pick six, putting the AFC up 14-10 early in the second quarter.

The NFC rallied back on its next drive, keyed by a BeastMode run out of Seahawks running back Marshawn Lynch. Lynch shed five tackles for a vicious 12-yard gain, easily the best run of a Pro Bowl that has so far been decidedly pass happy.

Two snaps after Lynch?s run, Eli hit Giants teammate Victor Cruz for a nine-yard touchdown on an in route out of the slot, giving the NFC the lead back at 17-14. Cruz, as he is known to do, performed a quick salsa dance in the end zone to celebrate.

Trailing by three points midway through the second quarter, the AFC replaced Peyton Manning at quarterback with Matt Schaub of the Texans. On a 40-yard bomb attempt intended for Broncos receiver Demaryius Thomas, Schaub was intercepted by Falcons safety William Moore. Moore returned the pick 27 yards to the NFC 28.

Eli got aggressive with under three minutes remaining in the first half. He noticed Rudolph in Chiefs linebacker Tamba Hali?s coverage down the right sideline, waved Rudolph to continue his route downfield, and hit him for a deep gain of 52 behind a lumbering Hali.

The first flag of the game was called on Broncos cornerback Champ Bailey toward the end of the second quarter. When explaining the penalty, official Ed Hochuli made sure to announce that ?Yes, there are penalties in the Pro Bowl.? (Yes, Hochuli really said that.)

Bailey was covering Bucs receiver Vincent Jackson in the end zone when whistled, so the ball was placed at the AFC?s one-yard line.

Lynch punched it in from a yard out, increasing the NFC?s lead to 24-14. Eli led yet another touchdown drive to close out the half, going 75 yards in the final 68 seconds with a three-yard scoring strike to Rudolph to cap it off.

As of halftime, top performers in the 2013 Pro Bowl so far have included Rudolph (five catches, game-high 122 yards, one touchdown), Jackson (five catches, 86 yards, one touchdown) and Cruz (game-high eight catches, 66 yards, touchdown).

Through two quarters, Rudolph is the favorite for Pro Bowl MVP.

PFT: Revis realizes trade talks all about money

1221_jargon-ducks-in-a-row_485x340Getty Images

From the moment the NFL pulled the sheet off the Saints bounty case, the NFL accused Saints coach Sean Payton of telling his staff to ?get your ducks in a row? when the league first investigated the situation in early 2010.

Here?s how we explained it on March 7, quoting from the NFL?s initial report:? ?When NFL Security went to interview Saints employees, coach Sean Payton instructed his staff to ?get your ducks in a row.?? The report doesn?t elaborate on the meaning of Payton?s remark; he quite possibly was telling the assistant coaches to get their stories (or, as the case may be, their categorical denials) straight.?

But the NFL elaborated on?get your ducks in a row? two weeks later, explaining in the statement announcing Payton?s suspension that he ?encourage[d] the false denials by instructing assistants to ?make sure our ducks are in a row.??

On Friday?s PFT Live, I asked Payton whether he said ?get your ducks in a row,? and if so what he meant by that.

?It was really a comment that I had made in preparation for what I knew was going to be an investigation,? Payton said.? ?I had been contacted, our front office had been, . . . and I wanted to make sure, more importantly than anything else that anyone that was going to be investigated or questioned had their facts straight and the specifics of it.?

Asked specifically whether he was suggesting that the coaches should lie, Payton said, ?I think more than anything else it just meant be prepared and, listen, I?ve read and seen a lot of the reports about what that was insinuating and I think, you know, we?re stretching it or really looking for something there.? It really wasn?t what I was insinuating at all.?

To be clear, the NFL never insinuated that.? The NFL flat-out said it, assuming that Payton meant he wanted his assistants to lie based on the perception that they did lie.? But given that Commissioner Paul Tagliabue found that defensive end Anthony Hargrove ? who was suspended eight games by Roger Goodell for allegedly lying at the behest of former Saints defensive coordinator Gregg Williams and Saints linebackers coach Joe Vitt ? may not have been lying based on the specific questions he was asked, then the presumption that getting ?our ducks in a row? was an instruction to tell lies may have been erroneous.

As we wrote after Tagliabue scuttled the player suspensions in December, ?In fairness to Payton, ?making sure our ducks are in a row? doesn?t necessarily mean ?making sure our lies are in a row.?? Lawyers routinely prepare witnesses before hearings and trials not with the goal of suborning perjury but of ensuring that an inadvertent misstatement of fact doesn?t provide the opposition with an unintended ?gotcha? moment.?

Though Payton is now back and the process has concluded, the fact remains that the NFL?s presumed smoking gun in the case supporting Payton?s full-season suspension may not have been.

Pollution from forest fires is impacting the health of people with asthma and other chronic obstructive lung diseases, finds a study in Biomed Central's open access journal Environmental Health. This study uses data from pharmacies and dispensaries to measure the increase in drugs needed to alleviate symptoms associated with pollution.

Forest fires burn nearly 1000 km2 of trees in British Columbia every year. The Ministry of Environment keeps a close watch on levels of particulate matter in the air caused by these fires but it is harder to measure the impact of this pollution on the health of people unless they are admitted to hospital.

Researchers from British Columbia Centre for Disease Control and University of British Columbia used dispensary records to find out if forest fires caused an increase in use of short acting beta agonist (SABA) such as salbutamol. Salbutamol sulphate is typically used as an inhaler to relive symptoms of asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and other obstructive lung diseases.

What they found was that pollution due to forest fires increased the need for salbutamol for up to 4 days after the fire even a relatively small increase in smoke (10g/m3 increase in PM2.5) was associated with a 6% increase in salbutamol dispensations.

Dr Catherine Elliott, who led this study commented, "Our study shows that forest fires and pollution are impacting the health of people with chronic lung diseases. It also shows that it is possible to measure public health by monitoring dispensary databases, and that dispensary data shows effects in small populations, that have not been found in studies on other health measures such as visits to physicians' offices. This information is often routinely collected, and available for the entire population, consequently it is possible to perform more meaningful analysis."

Rat Brains Learn to Predict Rewards

Rats are sporting tiny, sci-fi-esque goggles in the name of science. The result: In addition to providing some pretty cute images, the fashionable rats have revealed that parts of the brain related to vision also help animals predict future rewards.

An animal's ability to predict events is vital for avoiding danger and obtaining basic resources, such as a rewarding drink of water. Though scientists had known rats had the ability to make predictions, they thought only higher cognitive areas were involved. Now a new study, to be published in February in the journal Neuron, reveals how the vision center of a rat's brain can learn to time when a reward is imminent.

While the study was in rats, it could prove to be a good model for how learning occurs in the human brain, too.

"This is a fantastic example of how the response of cells changes due to a behavioral paradigm," said theoretical neuroscientist Harel Shouval of the University of Texas Medical School at Houston, who was not involved in the study but has worked previously with the researchers. "We can see the cells learning new behavior," he said.

Just as Pavlov's dog learned to associate the sound of a bell ringing with dinnertime, rats can learn to associate flashes of light with how long they must wait to receive a sip of water. Researchers outfitted rats with goggles that flashed a light in one of the animal's eyes to signal the rat to lick a spout in order to receive a drop of water.

A flash in one eye indicated a certain number of licks were required to release the water, while a flash in the other eye signaled that many more licks were necessary. The rats learned the connection between a signal to each eye and the licking time required. The researchers recorded the rats' brain activity using electrodes as the animals completed the task. Results showed, neurons in a vision center of the brain became active in response to one expected licking interval or the other, but not both.

Next, the researchers probed how this learning mechanism works. Nerves from a part of the rat brain known as the basal forebrain are thought to secrete the chemical acetylcholine into the brain's main vision center, also called the primary visual cortex, reinforcing connections that were recently active. When the scientists injected the rats with a neurotoxin that blocks those acetylcholine-releasing nerves, however, the rats' brains continued to remember the licking time for each signal, suggesting the acetylcholine and basal forebrain weren't needed to maintain those associations.

But then the scientists switched the visual cues, so a flash to the eye that signaled less licking now signaled more licking, and vice versa. Then they injected the neurotoxin into some rats but not others. The rats that didn't receive any neurotoxin learned the new association, but those that received the neurotoxin couldn't make the switch; their brains continued to remember the old mapping. The results indicate that the brain's primary vision area plays an important role in learning and relearning new associations.

There's more work to be done, says Shouval, but the findings strongly suggest that the primary visual cortex is not only sensory, but is involved in learning new behaviors as well.

AP Interview: Ohio's Kasich on 'trade mission'

DAVOS, Switzerland (AP) ? Ohio Gov. John Kasich says his state's economic comeback is generating interest ? and potential new business opportunities ? on the world stage in Switzerland.

The Republican governor told The Associated Press that he was initially reluctant to join other political, business and academic leaders participating in the annual World Economic Forum in Davos, Switzerland. But he decided to go because he realized that "it's like a trade mission."

Kasich said in the interview Friday that most of the 15 CEOs of big companies he has met with in Davos had already heard about Ohio's improved budget and employment picture during the two years he's been governor.

Among the companies he said he had held business discussions with were U.S.-based Dow Chemical Co. and Netherlands-based Royal Philips Electronics.
