Austerity in healthcare is a false economy as the immediate savings are outweighed by the huge spending required to cover the damage to people?s heath in the future, Dr. David Stuckler of Oxford University told RT.

Scientists at Oxford and Stanford Universities have brought to light the negative effect austerity measures have on health. They say spending cuts and mass lay-offs across Europe and North America are fueling a spike in suicide and depression. The academics behind the study believe the global financial crisis has caused as many as 10,000 to take their own lives.

Stuckler, who is leading the research into the impact of austerity economics on public health, says that health and education are the best channels to speed up the economic recovery, therefore cuts in the those sectors should be avoided.

RT: The situation was already extremely difficult for millions of people because of the economy. Why have you singled out austerity as a factor?

David Stuckler: What we?ve seen in studying recessions over the past century and with the focus on the present crisis is that recessions hurt. But when politicians with deep cuts to vital social supports, they can turn those recessions lethal. In the worst case we?ve seen Greece - after it cut its malaria prevention budget we saw the return of outbreaks that the country has kept under control over the past four decades. We?ve seen HIV infection spike by 200 per cent at a time when the HIV budget was cut. Similarly, we?ve seen across Europe austerity breed a series of epidemics ? from suicide to foregone access to healthcare to tuberculosis outbreak and even dengue fever.

Health workers and supporters carry a banner reading: "No to budget cuts and privatizations, Yes to public health system and services" during a protest against the Madrid regional government's Health Sustainability Plan (Reuters/Juan Medina)
RT: According to your theory countries that did not pursue austerity cuts, like Iceland, should be doing much better in health terms than those that did, is that the case?

DS: That?s a very good point because Iceland suffered the worst banking crisis in history ? all of its biggest banks failed and its debt jumped to over 800 per cent of GDP. But its people voted against austerity and instead shored up support in its health system. No one lost access to healthcare and, in fact, this country, which was once the happiest society in the world, again in 2011 was ranked as the happiest society in the world.? ?

RT: 10,000 is a lot of people. What do you think is the likely reaction from governments around the world to that and how do you think they should react?

DS: So far Europe?s leaders have been in denial about the human cost of the austerity policies that have been pursued across Europe and pursued in North America, with the sequester recently passed. What we need to do is take into account the health effects of economic policies. Had austerity been run like any other drug trial it would?ve been discontinued because of its deadly side effects.? ?

RT: Many leaders claim by making these cuts it is the only way to end the crisis. Are you of the same opinion?

DS:
First, the tuberculosis outbreaks, for example, that New York suffered in the mid-1990s ended up costing millions to control. So austerity in health is a false economy. But also we?ve looked at something called the fiscal multiplier this is the effect of government spending on the economy. It?s been subject of much debate lately. And what we?ve found is that investments in health and education as well are two of the best channels with large and positive fiscal multipliers that boost employment and spending power and help spur recovery. If you are going to make cuts there are other areas that have less damaging effects on the economy. So there?s a case in economic argument for protecting health, not only for its long-term social and health benefits, but also as strategy to spur recovery.

Google Now for iPhone and iPad: It's Here, and It's Great (UPDATED)

Rumors have been swirling that Google Now (the Big G's super-useful personal assistant application) would be coming to the search page on Google.com, but surprise! Our friends on iOS are getting the love first. Starting today, Google Now will be rolled into the Google Search app for iPhone and iPad.

Google Now, for those not familiar, is a very slick app that debuted in Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) last June. Its main selling point is that it gives you the information you want before you even ask for it. It's not perfect, but it's come a long way since launch, and it's pretty excellent. It can tell you when you need to leave for your next appointment, and give you directions for getting there. It can automatically track everything from your FedEx packages to your favorite sports teams in real time. The information shows up on little cards (and in notifications, if you so desire), which are easy to read and simple to dismiss. You decide how much or how little of your personal information you give it access to, but of course the more access you give it, the more it can do.

Google Now is now a part of the Google Search app for iOS. You just download the app (or app update if you already have it), and log in to your Google account. Then you can start tweaking it to your heart's content. While it will have almost all of the same functionality as the Android version, there will be a few things missing at launch: it can't yet manage your boarding passes, events, Fandango, concerts, research topics, nearby events, and a couple of other things, but those will likely be added soon. In the meantime, everything else is just as you'd find it in Jelly Bean. At the same time, it won't be quite as integrated an experience as it is on Android. On Android, Now runs constantly in the background, and is never more than a tap away. For iOS, it'll likely be sandboxed into Google Search, and won't be quite as easy to access. Still, though! Better to have it slightly hamstrung than not to have it at all.

You might think that Google would want to save some special sauce for its Android users, but ultimately Google sells Google, not Android. And while Google Now gives you lots of useful information, it also gives Google access to all kinds of geolocation and personal preference data that will make it easier to serve you highly relevant ads across every platform. The move also fits right in with the rumors that Now may be coming to Google's homepage for users who are signed in (which would be awesome). Google just wants you to use its products, and it's down to give away a lot of good stuff to keep you using them, regardless of what phone, computer, or browser you use.

iOS users can get Now through a Google Search update in the app store starting today. Give it a shot, and see what you think. It may take a few days for it to learn your preferences and what info is important to you, but once it does, you'll start to wonder how you ever lived without it. [Google]

UPDATE #1: Hands On
We just downloaded the app and have been playing with it. After a short explanation of what Now is, you'll be asked if you want to opt in. If you do (and you do), you log in, and it starts populating some cards right away. Because I've used Now on Android previously, it knew that I wanted A's and Giants scores, for example. It's very nicely laid out. The landing screen basically just looks like search, and then you scroll down to get into your Google Now cards. As with Android, if there's a card you're not interest in, you just swipe it away. Not surprisingly, searching by voice works really well.

Naturally, we haven't yet been able to test how well it works in the background or see what notifications will be like (which are a large part of the equation), but so far so good.

UPDATE #2: Houston, we have a problem.
As some of our astute readers have pointed out, using Google Now on iOS seems to lock your GPS into the ON position, which causes it to slurp down battery like a teenager with a Mountain Dew. Obviously, this isn't good. We've confirmed the problem on our device as well. Reaching out to Google for a comment now.

Install Shelves That Make Your House Look Windy

These shelves throw caution to the wind. They'll blow you away. They're a breeze. Can't. Stop. Puns. Everywhere. Look, the point is that paper scattering in the wind is a great motif for shelves and these are super pretty. Okay? Fine.

These steel shelves called BLOW were conceived by Japanese design studio YOY. Each shelf is A4 letter-sized and twisted to create the look of paper rustling in the breeze. The shelves are only available from the Italian home store Pianoprimo. Maybe adding some aesthetic chaos will make the mess in your house look intentional. [Spoon & Tamago]

Parents struggle with funding the high cost of college educations

Brian Kerr admits that when it comes to ideas for funding his children's college educations, "unfortunately, I don't have a great plan."

Which is why the father of quadruplets ? all juniors at Heritage High School in Littleton ? recently reached out to an unlikely source for assistance.

"I contacted Dr. Drew," Kerr said, referring to Drew Pinsky, who, besides being an internist, and radio and television host, is also the father of triplets.

"He's got more cheese than I do, but he sent back some reference materials," said Kerr, who added that he's taking an upcoming week off from his job to immerse himself in applications and financial-aid forms. "I was surprised, but right now, I'm looking at any angles that I can."

All across the state, there are families in similar pursuits, whether it's trying to get money for a future student or coming up with ways for current ones to fund their educations in the wake

(AP) ? Inbee Park was already preparing to congratulate Carlota Ciganda for winning the inaugural North Texas LPGA Shootout.

Park, the top-ranked woman in the world, was in the middle of a solid final round and still trailed by two strokes after the playing partners both had birdies at the par-5 10th.

Everything changed in a two-hole stretch, when Park went ahead with consecutive pars. The 24-year-old South Korean went on to a bogey-free 4-under 67 that put her one stroke ahead of Ciganda, good enough for her third victory this season and fifth in her last 18 starts.

"She was hitting fairways and greens and making putts," said Park, who finished at 13 under. "And I thought I played really great today, but I just missed a lot of birdie opportunities, so I thought this tournament might not be mine because I missed that many opportunities and Carlota was playing great golf. But she made a couple mistakes on the back nine."

Ciganda's drive at the 416-yard 14th hole settled in the right rough with a tree between her and the green, and her shot from about 130 yards clipped a branch and came up short. She had a chance to save par but her 6-foot putt was short, and Park's par had her within a stroke of the lead.

After stepping away from her approach at No. 15, to a green surrounded by water on three sides, Ciganda hit a shot that went to the right and then rolled down into the water. Ciganda had to go back to a drop zone, where the 22-year-old Spaniard had a decent pitch before her first putt rolled over the left edge of the green for a double bogey 6.

Park had another par and never trailed again.

"I'm very happy with my round and with my week. ... I had two bad holes on the back nine," Ciganda said.

With the $195,000 check for first place, Inbee exceeded $6 million in career earnings and will be No. 1 for the third week in a row. It was her sixth career LPGA victory, along with four more wins in Japan.

Fifth-ranked Suzann Pettersen from Norway, the winner in Hawaii last week, had a closing 66 to get to 10 under and finish third. Hee Young Park (64) and So Yeon Ryu (68) tied for fourth at 275.

Ciganda played last season on the Ladies European Tour, where she was the top rookie and the top money winner ? the first player since Laura Davies in 1985 to accomplish that feat. She won twice in Europe last year and now has her best LPGA finish.

At the 403-yard 8th hole, Park made a birdie before Ciganda followed with one of her own and responded with a slight fist pump when her ball dropped into the cup. They both had pars at No. 9, where Park was closer to the hole even though she was missed the green to the left, and they traded birdies again at the par-5 10th.

"I was happy and playing good and having fun and enjoying the day," said Ciganda, who had a closing 70. "And then I think, let me see, the hole it bounced to the right, but I had a bogey there and then hit it to the water on 15."

Caroline Masson had a 75 and finished eight shots back. The LPGA Tour rookie from Germany led after each of the first two rounds and started the final round tied for second with Park.

Hee Young Park's 64 was the best round of the day on the 6,439-yard course with plenty of sloping fairways and raised greens.

Stacy Lewis, the Texas native and No. 2 player in the world, had a closing 66 when all six birdies and her only bogey came between Nos. 7-17. She tied for seventh for her sixth top-10 finish this season.

At the end of her round, Lewis signed the back brace of a 6-year-old Dallas girl who was diagnosed with scoliosis at 18 months old. Lewis wore a similar brace 18 hours a day for seven years after being diagnosed with scoliosis at age 11 and missed her first collegiate season after a spinal fusion.

Third-ranked Na Yeon Choi, among the four players tied for seventh, had 44 consecutive bogey-free holes and was 9 under before consecutive bogeys at Nos. 10-12. She went on to a 72.

Inbee Park sank a 4-foot birdie putt on the par-5 18th after Ciganda also birdied even after her final drive went into the right rough. But they had an unusual wait after hitting their drives, when Jee Young Lee, playing two groups ahead of them, had to replay the hole.

Before Lee signed her scorecard, officials determined she took an improper drop after her drive at No. 18 went out of bounds. Lee carded a 10 before Ciganda and Park got to play out the hole.

"It was all right. I mean it was actually really good, it ended up really good for me because I made a birdie," Park said of the delay. "Maybe if I hit it in the water maybe I could have blamed it on them."

Obama pokes fun at critics, media at annual press dinner

By Jeff Mason

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama poked fun at the media, his critics and himself on Saturday at the annual White House Correspondents' Association dinner, a star-filled event where journalists and celebrities mixed with the Washington elite.

Joined at the dinner by his wife, first lady Michelle Obama, the president gently knocked Republicans for not working with him on policy priorities and made a rare reference to his race when urging the opposition party to be cooperative.

"I know Republicans are still sorting out what happened in 2012, but one thing they all agree on is they need to do a better job reaching out to minorities," Obama said.

"And look, call me self-centered, but I can think of one minority they could start with. Hello? Think of me as a trial run, you know?" he said.

Obama, a Democrat and the first black U.S. president, won re-election in November with overwhelming support from minority voters including blacks and Hispanics.

He took a swipe at people who have doubted his religion and accused him of being a radical leftist, while he made light of his graying hair.

"These days, I look in the mirror and I have to admit, I'm not the strapping young Muslim socialist that I used to be," Obama said. "Time passes. You get a little gray."

The president is a Christian who was born in Hawaii, but he included some material for so-called "birthers" who falsely assert he was born abroad.

"I'm also hard at work on plans for the Obama Library, and some have suggested that we put it in my birthplace, but I'd rather keep it in the United States," he said.

Obama made light of his own rapid rise to power by comparing himself to Republican Senator Marco Rubio, a Hispanic from Florida who is touted as a potential presidential candidate in 2016.

"One senator who has reached across the aisle recently is Marco Rubio, but I don't know about 2016. I mean, the guy has not even finished a single term in the Senate and he thinks he's ready to be president," Obama joked. "Kids these days."

Obama began running for president during his first term as a U.S. senator from Illinois.

In a room filled with journalists, the president saved some of his most biting jokes for the press.

"I know CNN has taken some knocks lately, but the fact is I admire their commitment to cover all sides of a story, just in case one of them happens to be accurate," he said, drawing applause.

"Some of my former advisors have switched over to the dark side. For example, David Axelrod now works for MSNBC, which is a nice change of pace since MSNBC used to work for David Axelrod."

Axelrod was the chief strategist for Obama's re-election campaign and a former White House adviser. MSNBC is considered to be a liberal-leaning television network.

Obama also made light of his wife's new bangs, drawing laughter from her when he showed mock pictures of himself with the same hairdo.

John Brawley flaunts first Blackmagic Pocket Cinema camera video footage video

Noted Blackmagic Design shooter John Brawley has released the first footage from the company's upcoming $995 Pocket Cinema Camera that might leave your DSLR green with envy. Though it's always tough to judge compressed web footage, to our eyes it looks completely untouched by the moire, aliasing and compression artifacts that tends to plague other digital cameras. While not specifying whether he used the compressed RAW setting or not, Brawley said he shot it using a Panasonic 12-35mm f/2.8 Micro Four Thirds lens with image stabilization turned on, meaning that feature's likely to be enabled on the camera when it arrives in late July. He also said he was "literally grabbing shots whilst I was shopping," which bodes well for serious filmmakers with a bit more time to spare. Head past the break to admire the video.

West Way Ranger to bag the first prize in Never A Quarrel ? Bet With Coral Sprint at Romford

West Way Ranger, the veteran, is still capable of showing his rivals the way home, and he is likely to do this thing in Never A Quarrel ? Bet With Coral Sprint, a 225 metres short race, scheduled to take place at Romford on Friday, April 26, 2013.

One should not judge him on the previous two ventures. After facing a few embarrassing defeats, the black dog raised his game, and took the runner-up place on two occasions earlier this month.

P. Young?s charge was unlucky last twice. After missing the gold medal only by three quarters of a length, he could not add the finishing touch, and ended up second by one and a half lengths.

The son of Droopys Maldini has loads of experience under his belt. He knows how to tackle the dangerous rivals. All he needs is a slice of luck and if he gets that, it will be an easy journey for him. The draw does not look a major concern, as he is standing in the second trap.

Among his rivals are: Ravestock Buzz, Strath For Cash, Ballinakill Gene, Her Over There, and Sharons Dilemma. The contest is due to begin at 19:31 GMT. A prize of 175 pounds is reserved for the ultimate champion.

As far as Sharons Dilemma?s prospects are concerned, the draw appears to be only real plus. The black bitch was terrible last time around, when finishing sixth on the table. Ballinakill Gene is a lightly raced type, and ran well on last visit over C&D.

Her Over There is still seeking to chalk up elusive first win. The black bitch was at bottom of the chart last time around. Strath For Cash returns to former hunting ground following lay-off. She surely needs a race or two to gain some momentum.

Ravestock Buzz has been hammered lately, but this is way less demanding than what he faced on last two occasions. On his previous outing here last week, the black dog finished fourth on the chart. He is unlikely to play a major role. We wish the best of luck to all the contenders.

WEDNESDAY, April 24 (HealthDay News) ? People who live in the so-called ?stroke belt? during their teen years are at increased risk for stroke later in life, according to a new study.

The stroke belt is an area in the southeastern United States with higher rates of stroke and stroke death than anywhere else in the country. Only part of that increased risk can be explained by traditional risk factors such as high blood pressure and diabetes, the researchers said.

Previous studies have found that adults who were born in the stroke belt but no longer live there have a higher risk of stroke, as well as people who were not born in the stroke belt but lived there as adults.

This new study included more than 24,000 people with an average age of 65 and no previous history of stroke. About 57 percent of them lived in the stroke belt and 43 percent in other parts of the country. The study authors looked at where the participants had lived during their lives.

The people were followed for an average of nearly six years after enrolling in the study. During the follow-up, more than 600 of them had a first stroke.

After adjusting for various stroke risk factors, the researchers concluded that living in the stroke belt only as a teen was associated with a higher risk of stroke. Study participants who lived in the stroke belt when they were teens were 17 percent more likely to suffer a stroke than those who did not spend their teen years in the stroke belt.

In all age groups, living in the stroke belt increased the risk of stroke among blacks about twice as much as among whites, according to the study, which was published online April 24 in the journal Neurology.

The findings suggest that efforts to prevent stroke need to start early in life, said study author Virginia Howard, with the School of Public Health at the University of Alabama at Birmingham.

?Many social and behavioral risk factors, such as smoking, are set in place during the teenage years, and teens are more exposed to external influences and gain the knowledge to challenge or reaffirm their childhood habits and lifestyle,? Howard said in a journal news release.

Although the study tied living in the stroke belt as a teen to higher risk of future stroke, it did not prove a cause-and-effect relationship.

ERs have become de facto psych wards

Apr. 24, 2013 ? Long waits for insurance authorization allowing psychiatric patients to be admitted to the hospital from the emergency department waste thousands of hours of physician time, given that most requests for authorization are ultimately granted. A research letter to be published in the May issue of Annals of Emergency Medicine argues that pre-authorization process is akin to health care "rationing by hassle factor" ("Insurance Prior Authorization Approval Does Not Substantially Lengthen the Emergency Department Length of Stay for Patients with Psychiatric Conditions").

"An emergency department is just about the worst place for a psychiatric patient to wait for an inpatient bed, and yet that is exactly what the pre-authorization process forces on millions of these vulnerable people," said senior author J. Wesley Boyd, MD, PhD of the Cambridge Health Alliance in Cambridge, Mass. "The thousands upon thousands of hours emergency physicians spend obtaining prior authorization for admission to the hospital are hours we are not spending on direct patient care. Only Medicare does not require prior authorization for us to admit psychiatric patients to the hospital; maybe they are onto something."

Researchers recorded data on 53 patients, most of whom were in the emergency department because they were having suicidal thoughts. Half of the authorization requests took under 20 minutes to be approved, but 10 percent of the patients' authorizations took an hour or more. Only one of the 53 patients' insurance carriers denied pre-authorization. There are approximately 2.5 million psychiatric admissions to hospitals every year in the U.S.

"Psychiatric care is really the poor stepchild in the world of insurance coverage," said lead author Amy Funkenstein, MD, of Brown University in Providence, R.I.. "Insurance carriers reimburse poorly and as a consequence, hospitals often have inadequate resources for patients who urgently need this care. The situation is so dire that ERs are now being designed and configured to house psychiatric patients awaiting placement as inpatients. These patients deserve better."

Southwest Airlines issues travel advisory warning passengers to ...

Southwest Airlines today issued a travel advisory on its website warning passengers to expect possible flight delays resulting from the Federal Aviation Administration?s employee furloughs that began Sunday.

The advisory came out as other airlines, including American Airlines, earlier today were diverted some flights from D/FW Airport to Dallas Love Field because of weather and furlough issues. Fort Worth-based American on Saturday issued a travel advisory similar to Southwest?s.

?The duration and frequency of these possible delays is unknown at this time because the FAA has not yet provided precise information to airlines,? Southwest said. The Dallas-based airline encourages customers to sign up for flight status alerts and to check local airport websites for up-to-date flight information.

On Sunday, the FAA began to furlough air traffic controllers every one day out of 10 under? automatic federal spending cuts this year. The Dallas/Fort Worth Airport and Dallas Love Field were not among the airports where the FAA expected to see serious delays on a daily basis, but it said delays still could happen depending on other factors such as weather and traffic at other airports.

The FAA attributed more than 1,200 flight delays nationwide yesterday to staffing shortages, but more than 1,400 other flights were delayed due to weather or other factors.

iPad sales in China and Japan more than doubled since last year

In today's conference call after the Q2 2013 fiscal results, Apple CFO Peter Oppenheimer revealed that Apple products are selling like gangbusters in East Asia. In China and Japan both, iPad sales more than doubled this quarter from the quarter the year prior. In China specifically, iPad sales were up 138% from last year.

iPhone sales are also up hugely since the last year. In Japan the iPhone has secured the top sales spot for the last four quarters. That's the first time a non-Japanese company has been able to dominate the Japanese smartphone market for a solid year. Apple CEO Tim Cook said that the company has seen a tremendous amount of interest in the iPhone 4 in China, and they've made price adjustments to make it more attractive to what he said was a massive potential market for first-time purchasers.

Apple brought in $8.8 billion in revenue from China, up 11% year-over-year. That's in spite of the media troubles that Apple has faced in China, though the company has handled the Chinese government's reaction more capably than others that have come under media attack in the People's Republic.

Alleged Canada plot turns focus to rail transport's vulnerability

By Ian Simpson

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - An alleged al Qaeda-backed plot to derail a U.S. passenger train in Canada sought to exploit the vulnerabilities of railroads that have not gotten much attention from the American public.

While the United States has sharply tightened security around airlines since the September 11, 2001, attacks, trains are far harder to police, with masses of passengers getting on and off and stops at many stations on a single line. Thousands of miles (km) of track, bridges and tunnels present a major challenge to monitor.

Even though the United States has largely been immune from attacks, extremists around the world have frequently exploited rail transport's vulnerability, said Brian Michael Jenkins, a security expert with the Mineta Transportation Center at California's San Jose State University.

"Surface transportation really has become the terrorists' killing fields," he said.

Two suspects were arrested in Canada on Monday charged with conspiring to blow up a trestle on the Canadian side of the border as the Maple Leaf, the daily Amtrak connection between Toronto and New York, passed over it. Amtrak is the U.S. passenger rail service.

The two men charged in the plot made their first court appearances on Tuesday. A lawyer for one said his client would fight the charges vigorously.

Jenkins and Steve Kulm, an Amtrak spokesman, said trains presented a unique security challenge, different from airports with their screening process for passengers.

Amtrak coordinates security with local law enforcement, does counterterrorism exercises and patrols its tracks and stations, Kulm said. It also is reconfiguring stations to make them safer from potential attack.

"It's no surprise and no secret that overseas terrorists have targeted rail transportation, and so we have, as I say, many seen and unseen measures that we have put in place and continue to improve upon," Kulm said.

MORE FATALITIES IN RAIL ATTACKS

Although popular attention has tended to focus on airliner attacks, far more people have died worldwide from surface rail assaults, Jenkins said.

Since the September 11, 2001, militant attacks on the United States, there have been 75 assaults on airliners, with 157 fatalities, he said.

During the same period, there were 1,800 attacks on surface transport, with nearly 4,000 people killed. Among them were attacks on Madrid in 2004 and on Mumbai in 2006 that each killed about 200 people, and a 2005 London bombing that claimed 52 lives.

In the United States, only one person has died from an extremist rail attack in recent decades, when Amtrak's Sunset Limited was derailed in Arizona in 1995. Responsibility was claimed by a group calling itself Sons of the Gestapo and the saboteurs have not been found.

The United States has more than 200,000 miles of railroad, with about 21,000 milesused by Amtrak. Amtrak carried 31.2 million passengers in the last fiscal year, its ninth record year in the last 10, Kulm said.

Elliot G. Sander, a former chief executive of the Metropolitan Transportation Authority of New York, which runs two of the biggest U.S. commuter railroads, said public awareness was critical to countering potential attacks.

"One cannot understate the importance of the participation of the public, in terms of eyes and ears," he said.

The Department of Homeland Security spent $136 million in the 2013 fiscal year on surface transportation security, with 775 personnel. Aviation security received $5.3 billion and has 53,000 personnel.

Special Visible Intermodal Prevention and Response (VIPR) teams have the job of carrying out random baggage and security checks at train, subway and bus stations as well as truck weighing stations.

Created after the Madrid railway bombing, the VIPR teams carried out more than 9,300 operations in fiscal 2011, according to the Department of Homeland Security's 2013 budget request.

The Transportation Security Administration (TSA) was criticized last year by the Government Accountability Office (GAO), an investigative arm of Congress, for failing to carry out analysis of railroad security information.

The GAO also criticized the TSA for inconsistent reporting requirements from rail agencies and failure to inspect a rail service the GAO did not name. The TSA concurred with the GAO's recommendations for improvement.

Dove Sketches Show Women Are Too Self Critical - Business Insider

Dove's new "real beauty" campaign, by Ogilvy, employed an FBI sketch artist to help show women that they are more beautiful than they think.

Without ever seeing the women in question, forensic artist?Gil Zamora asked women to describe themselves. He then asked strangers who had previously interacted with the subjects to describe the very women.

While the subjects said things like, "I have a fat, rounder face," "I would say I have a pretty big forehead," the strangers were far more complimentary. Sketches based on the strangers' views were not only more attractive, but more representative of how the women actually looked.?

We've collected the images that show how much women are prone to being overly self critical.

New app finds upcoming yoga classes wherever you are

By Natasha Baker

TORONTO (Reuters) - From hatha to vinyasa and everything in between, a new app helps yoga lovers find upcoming classes nearby.

Om finders, an iPhone app, detects a user's location and shows yoga classes happening at studios around them, including time and directions.

"The vision was to get more people on planet earth doing yoga," said Nancy Richardson, vice president of digital and brand strategy at Vancouver-based yoga apparel company Lululemon.

Classes can be found at nearly 7,000 studios in 63 countries worldwide and can be filtered by time and type, including hatha, power flow, vinyasa and hot yoga.

"It offers lots of different options to try different classes, types of yoga, and experience different teachers," Richardson said.

Yogis can also keep up with the schedules of their favorite instructors. The app has over 30,000 instructor profiles, which include a schedule of their upcoming classes.

According to Rachel Acheson, vice president of brand and community at Lululemon, the turnover for yoga is high. Although there are approximately 20 million people practicing yoga, about 20 percent drop out every year.

"The new people to yoga every year is substantial," said Acheson. "Finding your teacher is one of the biggest things that drives commitment to the practice."

Users can invite friends to join in on class by sending a text, tweet, email or Facebook message through the app, and keep track of the classes they're headed to.

The app launched Thursday and by Saturday had been downloaded over 18,000 times. It secured the top spot in the Health and Fitness category on Apple's App Store in Canada, and the third spot in the category in the U.S.

It is the first digital experience that the company has developed in-house, and is part of Lululemon's push towards creating hyper-local experiences for consumers.

"That connection with our guests and studio partners is happening on a local level," Richardson said. "Our digital strategy is people-first. Our goal is to build authentic relationships with communities."

Although users can add a class to their schedule, which syncs with the calendar app, it is not yet possible to book or pay for a class within the app.

"We're waiting to see what guests want, and we're not confident they're going to want to book," Richardson responded, adding that the company is actively monitoring feedback.

The company will continue to monitor demand for other platforms, but the company's customers are predominantly iPhone users, according to Richardson.

A similar app called Mindbody Yoga is available for iPhone, created by Mindbody, the company that supplies the data about classes, studios and instructors used in Om Finder.

It allows users to book and pay for classes if the studio supports that capability. It does not, however, provide the social features found in Om Finder, or information about in-store classes.

Another app called GoRecess, available on the web, allows users in the United States to find and book fitness classes in their cities, including yoga, strength-training, dance martial arts and boot camp classes.

Milo Ventimiglia Joins Jason Statham in ''Heat'' Remake

By Greg Gilman

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - Milo Ventimiglia has been cast in a lead role opposite Jason Statham in "Heat," a remake of the 1986 Burt Reynolds movie of the same name.

Ventimiglia ("Heroes") will play Danny DeMarco, a role portrayed by Neil Barry in the original. Danny is the son of a prominent businessman with ties to a mobster and casino owner named Baby. Given his father's connections, arrogant Danny believes himself to untouchable and travels with two bodyguards to make sure he remains untouchable.

Statham is taking over for Reynolds as a recovering gambling addict who finds work providing protection to his friends.

William Goldman, author of the novel the original film was based on, once again wrote the adapted screenplay for the flick being directed by Simon West ("The Expendables 2"). SJ Pictures, Quad Productions and Current Entertainment are producing.

Ventimiglia will next be seen on the big screen as a frat boy tormenting Adam Sandler in "Grown Ups 2," and co-starring with Nicole Kidman in the winter release of "Grace of Monaco."

Ventimiglia is repped by CAA and Management 360.
