Sigma DP2 Merrill


The DP2 Merrill ($999 direct) is one of a trio of fixed-lens cameras?offered by Sigma. They all share the same image sensor, but the focal length of their f/2.8 lenses varies. The DP2 features a lens that produces a standard-angle field of view, perfect for shooters who eschew wide angles. The APS-C Foveon image sensor is a unique design that captures an incredible amount of detail, but requires special software for Raw processing. We liked it a bit better than the DP1 Merrill and DP3 Merrill. Its JPG engine outclasses the DP1 and it's speedier to focus than the DP3, which is slowed by its macro lens. The DP2 will reward you if you work within its limits, and it's the only camera of its type with a standard-angle lens. It doesn't oust the Ricoh GR as our Editors' Choice for prime lens compact cameras. Photos taken with the pocketable GR don't require any special processing, but the lens captures a very different wide-angle field of view that isn't for everyone.

Foveon Image Sensor, Design, and Features
Much like the Sigma DP1 Merrill, the DP2 uses a Foveon X3 image sensor. This design uses three layers to record information,?each one sensitive to a different color channel. Traditional digital cameras use a single-layer sensor with a Bayer overlay, which has grids of red, blue, and green pixels to create a color image. Each layer of the DP2's sensor boasts a 15.4-megapixel resolution?because of this, Sigma advertises it as a 46-megapixel camera, even though the resulting, printable images are limited to 15.4 megapixels in size.

The sensor design omits the low-pass filter, which is a trend on higher-end cameras. But because of its design, which by its nature omits the Bayer color-array filter, there's no danger of moir? entering into your shots. The downside to the unique design is that there's no support for the DP2's Raw format in Lightroom or similar software programs?you'll have to use Sigma's Raw software to process photos. The software leaves a lot to be desired, but you can use it as a basic converter to convert the Raw images into TIFF format, which can then be imported into Lightroom or the workflow application of your choice.

In terms of design, the DP2 is essentially a brick with a lens, measuring 2.6 by 4.8 by 2.3 inches, and weighing in at 11.6 ounces. It's not that far off in size and weight from the 2.7-by-4.9-by-2 inch, 11.2-ounce Leica X2, which has a wider 36mm-equivalent lens. The X2 supports an add-on EVF, which is an option that is not available on the DP2. There is a hot shoe directly above the lens, so using a fixed optical finder that matches its field of view and trusting its autofocus system is an option.

The lens is a 30mm focal length, which translates into 45mm in terms of full-frame photography. It has a maximum aperture of f/2.8, which is a little slow for a standard-angle design. The full-frame Sony Cyber-shot DSC-RX1 has a faster, wider 35mm f/2 lens, but costs nearly three times as much as the Sigma. If you're looking for zoom, look elsewhere, but for those of us who see the world in that focal length, the DP2 is a welcoming camera.

Pleasingly minimal, the camera's color scheme is flat black, with a metal chassis that is cool to the touch. Buttons are labeled in white for shooting functions, and red for playback functions. On top you'll find the Power button, Mode button, a control wheel, and the shutter. The rear houses the Auto Exposure lock, a four-way controller with a center select button (the up direction lets you select the focus mode, the bottom the focus point), an image playback button, a button to control the amount of information shown on the rear display, the menu button, and the QS button.

The QS (Quick Set) button grants access to seven quick shooting controls. Press it once and you can adjust the ISO, exposure compensation, drive mode, and image format settings. Press it a second time and the menu switches to white balance, image compression, color balance, and image format (in the same place as the first menu) settings. It's a well-designed interface, and lets you adjust settings without diving into the menu system.

The 3-inch rear display packs a 920k-dot resolution. It's sharp and gives you a good idea about the quality of the images you are capturing. The display is just as sharp as the 1.2-million-dot display on the Ricoh GR, but it's not as bright; that camera has an extra layer of white pixels that make it possible to view on even the brightest days.

Artsplosure Announces Lineup for 34th Annual Raleigh Arts Festival

Artsplosure is pleased to announce the lineup for its 34th annual namesake spring arts festival May 17-19 in and around Moore Square and on City Plaza in downtown Raleigh.

Celebrating fine visual art and live music since 1980, this year?s festival continues the tradition of presenting high quality and accessible art for free in the heart of the capital city. As one of the Southeast?s premier arts festivals, Artsplosure ? The Raleigh Arts Festival attracts more than 80,000 people to downtown Raleigh during the third weekend of May each year.

The Artsplosure Art Market ? one of the central elements of this annual celebration ? showcases the talents of 170 juried independent visual artists and crafters, including North Carolina-based artists and artists from across the United States. Artwork by fine artists and craftspeople exhibiting in 10 different categories will be available for purchase, including painting, photography, pottery, jewelry, woodwork and more. Booths will line Blount, Martin, and Hargett Streets near Moore Square and City Market. The Art Market will be open Saturday, May 18 from 11:00am to 7:00pm and Sunday, May 19 from 10:00am to 5:00pm.

In addition to the visual arts, Artsplosure highlights superb performing artists, with an emphasis on jazz, blues and roots-inspired musicians. Artsplosure 2013 will feature more than a dozen music performances on two stages in Moore Square on Saturday and Sunday during the festival. Headlining the Main Stage in Moore Square at 8:00 Saturday evening will be BoDeans ? a Milwaukee-based American roots rock band whose hit ?Closer to Free? became the theme song for the television show Party of Five. The group released their eleventh studio album, American Made, in 2012.? Closing out the festival on Sunday afternoon at 5:30 will be a performance by The Wailers ? the legendary groundbreaking reggae group founded by the late Bob Marley.

The Main Stage lineup also includes performances by blues guitar prodigy Quinn Sullivan; the African-inspired music of Toubab Krewe; Piedmont blues from Jon Shain; jazz saxophonist Jeanette Harris; soulful singer-songwriter Jesse Dee; and jazz/pop from Boston-based Lake Street Dive.

The North Carolina Stage will showcase up and coming young artists and performers with North Carolina roots. Taking the stage this year will be bluegrass band Holy Ghost Tent Revival; jazz/folk singer-songwriter Jeanne Jolly; Grammy-winner Barbara Bailey Hutchison; indie pop group Matrimony; acoustic string band Corn and the Colonels; gospel/pop group Hazelwood; and emerging singer-songwriter and pianist Dylan Linehan.

Artsplosure is happy to present the Raleigh debut of the GO Roadshow from Pittsburgh?s Squonk Opera with ten performances on City Plaza from Friday, May 17 through Sunday, May 19. According to Squonk Opera, their multi-disciplinary GO Roadshow is ?a music and art-mobile ? a 34-foot long monster truck retrofitted with truck-horn calliope, a wall made of rotors and a spinning grand piano that is played while it
wheels around!? GO Roadshow performances include a participatory musical mini-parade and opportunities for discussion with the performers following each show.

Chancellors see Berkeley's future through students' eyes

?It?s very hard to know what language to use to reconstitute a sense of the public good that is in accord with what we?re doing at this institution. In a way you?re all dealing with this,? Nicholas Dirks told a small group of students Thursday. ?There?s something special about this place, and we have to be able to communicate that.?

Dirks, who takes over as Berkeley?s chancellor on June 1, and Robert Birgeneau, who has held that position for nine years, took a lunch meeting in a Durant Hall conference room with the winners of the campus?s Fiat Lux Remix contest, in which students, faculty and staff members were invited to revisit Ansel Adams images of UC campuses from the book Fiat Lux, the subject of last fall?s On the Same Page program.

On Thursday, Dirks and Birgeneau heard brief presentations from five of the seven winners of the contest, who showed off their visual handiwork ? except, that is, for co-grand prize winner Luis Flores, whose entry was a paper titled ?The American University and the Establishment of Neoliberal Hegemony? ? and shared their thoughts about Berkeley and, in the spirit of the 1967 book Fiat Lux, commissioned by then-President Clark Kerr, its character as a public institution.

?It seems like you?re facing a time when key institutional habits of this university are in peril, and have been for a few years,? Flores told Dirks, a reference to fiscal struggles facing both the UC system and the Berkeley campus. ?

Catherine Cole, a professor of theater, dance and performance studies, was the driving force behind the ?Fiat Lux Redux? project. She told the incoming and outgoing chancellors how, during tours of a recent Bancroft Museum exhibition of Adams? photographs, she routinely asked visitors how they responded to people who demanded to know why they should subsidize the university when its students will earn more money after they graduate ? a private, not a public, good?

It was not until the final tour, she told them, that one woman answered, ?You need a highly educated electorate in order to have a highly functioning democracy.?

That idea ? the critical importance to society of the less tangible benefits of a vibrant public-university system ? drew a positive response from both Birgeneau and Dirks.

To boost public support during the economic downturn, Birgeneau said, ?We?ve focused so much on the economic benefits to our graduates, I think it?s really backfired on us.?

?One of the things that we?ve been called upon to do as senior leaders of universities is constantly to instrumentalize the value of a college education,? added Dirks. ?That?s become to a very large extent the way in which the public evaluates the success or failure of institutions of higher education. In a way, by giving in to that, we?ve abdicated what used to be a much more common way of thinking and talking about higher education? We have to find the language to justify the less quantifiable things that we do.?

Individual brain cells track where we are and how we move

May 2, 2013 ? Leaving the house in the morning may seem simple, but with every move we make, our brains are working feverishly to create maps of the outside world that allow us to navigate and to remember where we are.

Take one step out the front door, and an individual brain cell fires. Pass by your rose bush on the way to the car, another specific neuron fires. And so it goes. Ultimately, the brain constructs its own pinpoint geographical chart that is far more precise than anything you'd find on Google Maps.

But just how neurons make these maps of space has fascinated scientists for decades. It is known that several types of stimuli influence the creation of neuronal maps, including visual cues in the physical environment -- that rose bush, for instance -- the body's innate knowledge of how fast it is moving, and other inputs, like smell. Yet the mechanisms by which groups of neurons combine these various stimuli to make precise maps are unknown.

To solve this puzzle, UCLA neurophysicists built a virtual-reality environment that allowed them to manipulate these cues while measuring the activity of map-making neurons in rats. Surprisingly, they found that when certain cues were removed, the neurons that typically fire each time a rat passes a fixed point or landmark in the real world instead began to compute the rat's relative position, firing, for example, each time the rodent walked five paces forward, then five paces back, regardless of landmarks. And many other mapping cells shut down altogether, suggesting that different sensory cues strongly influence these neurons.

Finally, the researchers found that in this virtual world, the rhythmic firing of neurons that normally speeds up or slows down depending on the rate at which an animal moves, was profoundly altered. The rats' brains maintained a single, steady rhythmic pattern.

The findings, reported in the May 2 online edition of the journal Science, provide further clues to how the brain learns and makes memories.

The mystery of how cells determine place

"Place cells" are individual neurons located in the brain's hippocampus that create maps by registering specific places in the outside environment. These cells are crucial for learning and memory. They are also known to play a role in such conditions as post-traumatic stress disorder and Alzheimer's disease when damaged.

For some 40 years, the thinking had been that the maps made by place cells were based primarily on visual landmarks in the environment, known as distal cues -- a tall tree, a building -- as well on motion, or gait, cues. But, as UCLA neurophysicist and senior study author Mayank Mehta points out, other cues are present in the real world: the smell of the local pizzeria, the sound of a nearby subway tunnel, the tactile feel of one's feet on a surface. These other cues, which Mehta likes to refer to as "stuff," were believed to have only a small influence on place cells.

Could it be that these different sensory modalities led place cells to create individual maps, wondered Mehta, a professor with joint appointments in the departments of neurology, physics and astronomy. And if so, do these individual maps cooperate with each other, or do they compete? No one really knew for sure.

Virtual reality reveals new clues

To investigate, Mehta and his colleagues needed to separate the distal and gait cues from all the other "stuff." They did this by crafting a virtual-reality maze for rats in which odors, sounds and all stimuli, except distal and gait cues, were removed. As video of a physical environment was projected around them, the rats, held by a harness, were placed on a ball that rotated as they moved. When they ran, the video would move along with them, giving the animals the illusion that they were navigating their way through an actual physical environment.

As a comparison, the researchers had the rats -- six altogether -- run a real-world maze that was visually identical to the virtual-reality version but that included the additional "stuff" cues. Using micro-electrodes 10 times thinner than a human hair, the team measured the activity of some 3,000 space-mapping neurons in the rats' brains as they completed both mazes.

What they found intrigued them. The elimination of the "stuff" cues in the virtual-reality maze had a huge effect: Fully half of the neurons being recorded became inactive, despite the fact that the distal and gate cues were similar in the virtual and real worlds. The results, Mehta said, show that these other sensory cues, once thought to play only a minor role in activating the brain, actually have a major influence on place cells.

And while in the real world, place cells responded to fixed, absolute positions, spiking at those same positions each time rats passed them, regardless of the direction they were moving -- a finding consistent with previous experiments -- this was not the case in the virtual-reality maze.

"In the virtual world," Mehta said, "we found that the neurons almost never did that. Instead, the neurons spiked at the same relative distance in the two directions as the rat moved back and forth. In other words, going back to the front door-to-car analogy, in a virtual world, the cell that fires five steps away from the door when leaving your home would not fire five steps away from the door upon your return. Instead, it would fire five steps away from the car when leaving the car. Thus, these cells are keeping track of the relative distance traveled rather than absolute position. This gives us evidence for the individual place cell's ability to represent relative distances."

Mehta thinks this is because neuronal maps are generated by three different categories of stimuli -- distal cues, gait and "stuff" -- and that all are competing for control of neural activity. This competition is what ultimately generates the "full" map of space.

"All the external stuff is fixed at the same absolute position and hence generates a representation of absolute space," he said. "But when all the stuff is removed, the profound contribution of gait is revealed, which enables neurons to compute relative distances traveled."

The researchers also made a new discovery about the brain's theta rhythm. It is known that place cells use the rhythmic firing of neurons to keep track of "brain time," the brain's internal clock. Normally, Mehta said, the theta rhythm becomes faster as subjects run faster, and slower as running speed decreases. This speed-dependent change in brain rhythm was thought to be crucial for generating the 'brain time' for place cells. But the team found that in the virtual world, the theta rhythm was uninfluenced by running speed.

"That was a surprising and fascinating discovery, because the 'brain time' of place cells was as precise in the virtual world as in the real world, even though the speed-dependence of the theta rhythm was abolished," Mehta said. "This gives us a new insight about how the brain keeps track of space-time."

The researchers found that the firing of place cells was very precise, down to one-hundredth of a second, "so fast that we humans cannot perceive it but neurons can," Mehta said. "We have found that this very precise spiking of neurons with respect to 'brain-time' is crucial for learning and making new memories."

Mehta said the results, taken together, provide insight into how distinct sensory cues both cooperate and compete to influence the intricate network of neuronal activity. Understanding how these cells function is key to understanding how the brain makes and retains memories, which are vulnerable to such disorders as Alzheimer's and PTSD.

"Ultimately, understanding how these intricate neuronal networks function is a key to developing therapies to prevent such disorders," he said.

Other authors of the study included Pascal Ravassard, Ashley Kees and Bernard Willers, all lead authors, and David Ho, Daniel A. Aharoni, Jesse Cushman and Zahra M. Aghajan of UCLA. Man accused of shoplifting from Finders Keepers says store name misleading

After being accused of shoplifting from a Derry, N.H., thrift store called Finders Keepers, Ruben Pavon is arguing that he was simply confused by the store's name.

WMUR.com reports that surveillance video shows Pavon taking a grill from the store's porch. Pavon told WMUR, "I grabbed the box. It was a fire pit, something like that. It turned into a grill, and I took it home."

It wasn't the first time Pavon helped himself to what he says he thought was free merchandise. He also told WMUR:

I thought it was there for the taking. The sign did say "Finders Keepers." So I took that DVD player, took it home. A couple of weeks later, the stuff is still there on the porch, so I'm thinking to myself, 'Finders Keepers. They probably just put stuff out there for people to take.'"

WMUR also spoke with store owner Laura Barker, who remains dubious about Pavon's reasoning:

I don't know of any stores where there's free stuff. It would be nice if there were. I'd be there on a regular basis myself.

The official site for Finders Keepers explains that a portion of its items "are donations, in which the proceeds of those items go to help purchasing 'needs' of local community organizations specifically to help children in need."

Pavon has returned all the items to the store. Local police are continuing to investigate. WMUR reports that there is still no word on whether criminal charges will be filed. Nor is there word on whether Barker intends to change the name of her store to Not for Free.

(AP) ? State officials say thousands of people with medical problems are in danger of losing coverage as the Obama administration winds down one of the earliest programs in the federal health care overhaul.

At risk is the Pre-Existing Condition Insurance Plan, a transition program that has turned into a lifeline for the so-called "uninsurables" ? people with serious medical conditions who can't get coverage elsewhere.

The health care law capped spending on the program, and now money is running out.

In a letter this week to Health and Human Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, state officials said they were "blindsided" and "disappointed" by a federal proposal they say would shift the risk for cost overruns to states in the waning days of the program.

There was no immediate response from HHS.
