Heart disease may lead to prostate cancer | Hamara Health

Washington, Feb 9 (ANI): Researchers have suggested that coronary artery disease may be a risk factor for prostate cancer.

If the relation is confirmed, the malignancy might be combated in part by lifestyle changes such as weight loss, exercise and a healthy diet, which are known to prevent heart disease.

"What?s good for the heart may be good for the prostate," said Jean-Alfred Thomas II, M.D., a post-doctoral fellow in the Division of Urology at Duke Cancer Institute and lead author of the study.

Risk factors of coronary artery disease include inactivity, obesity, high blood pressure and cholesterol, cigarette smoking, and diabetes.

Previous studies exploring the relationship between coronary artery disease and prostate cancer risk have found conflicting results, making it difficult to determine whether the malignancy is fueled by poor lifestyle choices.

In the current study, the Duke team used data from 6,390 men enrolled in a large study called REDUCE, a four-year, randomized trial to test the prostate cancer risk reduction benefits of a drug called dutasteride.

All the study participants had a prostate biopsy at the two- and four-year marks, regardless of their PSA levels. They also provided a detailed medical history that included their weight, incidence of heart disease, alcohol intake, medication use and other factors.

Among the men in the study, 547 reported a pre-enrollment history of coronary artery disease. This group of men tended to be older, heavier and less healthy, with higher baseline PSA levels, plus more diabetes, hypertension and high cholesterol. The men were also much more likely to develop prostate cancer, even after accounting for all the baseline differences.

Having coronary artery disease increased the men?s risk of prostate cancer by 35 percent, with the risk rising over time.

The group was 24 percent more likely to be diagnosed with prostate cancer within the first two years of the study than men who reported no heart disease, and by four years into the study, this group?s prostate cancer risk was 74 percent higher.

"We controlled for a number of risk factors, including hypertension, taking statins or aspirin. We don?t have a good grasp on what?s causing the link, but we are observing this association," Thomas said.

Stephen Freedland, M.D., associate professor of surgery and pathology in the Division of Urology at Duke and senior author of the paper, said the study had some shortcomings. Notably, it relied on data from a previous trial that didn?t account for factors such as diet, physical activity and severity of heart disease that may have influenced the results.

But Freedland said the study eliminated a screening bias common in previous findings that correlated prostate cancer and heart disease using men with high PSA levels.

The finding appears online this month in the journal Cancer Epidemiology, Biomarkers and Prevention. (ANI)

Ice Cream Sandwich is slowly trickling out to the masses, but we're still waiting on the major phone vendors to come out with their own tweaks of the latest Android dessert. We've known that HTC's busy plugging away at its Sense-ified version of Android 4.0, but the company's finally ready to start discussing specifics. According to the outfit's UK Facebook page, the update will begin rolling out to the HTC Sensation and Sensation XE by the end of March, with the Sensation XL following suit. Additionally, owners of the EVO 3D, Incredible S, Desire S and Desire HD still haven't been forgotten, but their long-awaited upgrades to Ice Cream Sandwich will come sometime "later this year." That sure narrows down the timeframe. Hopefully we won't have to wait until the end of March to officially cast our eyes on the new Sense, as we're keeping our fingers crossed that we'll see some ICS love in new devices at Mobile World Congress later this month.

Update: HTC's US Facebook page also announced the update, and added the Rezound, Vivid, Amaze 4G and EVO Design 4G to the list of devices that should receive ICS later this year.

Greek debt talks drag on but banks signal progress (AP)

ATHENS, Greece ? Greece's private creditors signaled progress late Tuesday on a debt-relief deal but crucial talks between Greek coalition leaders about forcing more austerity upon a hostile public were again postponed.

Anger flared on the streets of Athens as more than 20,000 protesters marched through the Greek capital and unions called a general strike Tuesday against the new cuts in jobs and spending. The strike halted trains and ferries, closed down schools and banks and put state hospitals on short staffing.

Several hundred protesters clashed with riot police outside Parliament and set fire to a German flag ? upset over Germany's role in demanding more austerity from Athens.

"They are committing a crime against the country. They are driving wage-earners into poverty and wiping out pensioners and the unemployed," said Vangelis Moutafis, a senior member of Greece's largest union, the GSEE. "They are selling off state assets for nothing. This cannot continue."

Greek Premier Lucas Papademos delayed a meeting with his coalition parties till Wednesday, staying in talks until late in the night with top bank negotiators as well as with debt inspectors from the European Union and the International Monetary Fund.

Greece is under massive time pressure to secure a new euro130 billion ($170 billion) bailout from its partners in the euro and the IMF without which it will default in March on its massive debts.

Representatives of the Institute of International Finance, which has been leading the talks for private bondholders on forgiving Greece part of its debts, had a "constructive meeting" with Papademos, IIF spokesman Frank Vogl said.

Papademos and Finance Minister Evangelos Venizelos will soon brief the rest of the 17-nation eurozone on the proposed deal, Vogl said ? a sign the bond-swap deal could be close.

The meeting of eurozone finance ministers could happen as soon as Thursday in Brussels, according to officials, although that will depend on finding agreement in Athens on the terms of the second bailout.

Greece has been kept solvent since May 2010 by payments from a euro110 billion ($145 billion) international rescue loan package. When it became clear the money would not be enough, a second bailout was decided last October.

As well as passing new austerity measures, the second bailout depends on Greece's separate talks with banks and other private bondholders to forgive euro100 billion ($132 billion) in Greek debt. The private investors are expected to swap their current bonds for new bonds worth 50 percent less than the original face value, with longer repayment terms and a lower interest rate.

Without the new debt deals, Greece would face a disastrous default in late March.

The intense talks in Athens were supposed to be finished last weekend, but have dragged on over EU-IMF demands for a new round of austerity measures that include civil service job cuts and slashing Greece's minimum wage.

The Greek government has already accepted that it must cut 15,000 state jobs in 2012 to get the new bailout, as well cut 2012 spending by a further euro3.3 billion ($4.3 billion), reduce wage costs in the private sector and recapitalize banks without nationalizing them.

But disagreement remains between Greek lawmakers on the extent of those cuts.

A government official said Papademos' draft agreement on the austerity deal would be sent to Greek party leaders for scrutiny early Wednesday. "It took much longer than expected," the official told the AP, speaking on condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the talks.

The government's coalition partners ? the majority Socialists, main rival conservatives and the small right-wing LAOS party ? are also at odds over whether to go ahead with plans for an early election in April.

The Socialists, who handed over power to Papademos in November, want him to stay through parliament's four-year term that ends in late 2013, while conservatives are demanding an April vote.

LAOS leader George Karatazferis also criticized eurozone heavyweights France and Germany on Tuesday, saying they were carrying out an "aggressive humiliation of Greece" with all their demands for new austerity measures.

A disorderly bankruptcy by Greece would likely lead to its exit from the eurozone, a situation that European officials have insisted is impossible because it would hurt other weak countries like Portugal, Ireland and Italy.

But on Tuesday, the Neelie Kroes, one of the EU's 27 commissioners, said Greece's exit wouldn't be a disaster.

"It's always said: if you let one nation go, or ask one to leave, the entire structure will collapse. But that is just not true," Kroes told Dutch newspaper De Volkskrant.

She added that "Greece is not living up to its promises: too few savings, too few reforms ... It's becoming a Greek mantra: 'We cannot. We won't'!"

But EU Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso quickly stepped in to counter her remarks.

"We are in a very decisive moment regarding the future of Greece and the future of the euro. We want Greece in the euro," he said. "The costs of a default by Greece, the costs of a potential exit of Greece from the euro would be a lot higher than the costs of continuing to support Greece."

While Greece remains cut off from international bond markets ? where it would have to pay interest of about 35 percent to sell 10-year issues ? it maintains a market presence through regular short-term debt sales.

On Tuesday, Greek borrowing costs dropped slightly as the country raised euro812 million ($1.06 billion) in an auction of 26-week treasury bills. The interest rate was 4.86 percent, compared to 4.90 percent in a similar auction last month. The auction was 2.72 times oversubscribed.

Jurassic cricket's song recreated

Night-time in the Jurassic forest was punctuated by the unmistakable sound of chirping bush crickets.

This is according to scientists who have reconstructed the song of a cricket that chirped 165 million years ago.

A remarkably complete fossil of the prehistoric insect enabled the team to see the structures in its wings that rubbed together to make the sound.

The international team report their findings in the journal PNAS.

Scientists from the US and China discovered the tiny fossil and named their newly discovered species Archaboilus musicus , because the music-making structures in its body were so clearly visible.

When insect expert Dr Fernando Montealegre Zapata, from the University of Bristol, found out that his colleagues had such a remarkable fossil, he was keen to see it.

"I was very surprised," he told BBC Nature, "because those [structures] are very very small - at the microscopic level."

Dr Zapata studies sound production and communication in living insects, working out how the musical instruments contained in many insects' bodies produce a particular sound, and exactly how that sound is made.

He immediately asked the question: "Could we reproduce the sounds [this insect made] from that fossil?"

Just like modern bush crickets - also known as katydids - the Jurassic insects produced music with their wings. A "plectrum" on one wing was dragged along a microscopic comb-like structure on the other.

This produces a continuous "chirp" as the male insects rub, or "stridulate" their wings in a scissor-like motion. Dr Zapata described this stridulation as similar to playing a tiny violin.

By looking at the wing structures, he explained, "I could estimate that the animal made pure, musical tones".

Such a single-note tone would have transmitted efficiently - a regular wave of sound penetrating a noisy environment cluttered with vegetation. This would have allowed a female cricket to detect a male's song from tens of metres away.

Dr Zapata then set out to calculate the frequency of the tone, which denotes how high- or low-pitched it sounded. To to this, he simply compared the size and shape of its music-making or "stridulatory" instruments to those of living cricket species.

"I produced a graph of [living] species, plotting the measurements of their sound-making structures against the frequency of the sound they made," he explained.

"Using the measurements, I could plot this extinct species onto that graph."

He discovered that A. musicus used a relatively low-pitched song, compared with modern bush crickets.

This suggested that the Jurassic forest was a cluttered and "noisy environment - especially at night", he said.

"There were probably frogs, other [insects] and sounds from the water," he said.

Being nocturnal, A. musicus would not have had to hide its musical call from predators that were active during the day, including the famous Jurassic bird, Archaeopteryx.

The crickets may have been hunted by early mammals. But bats - many of which feast on nocturnal insects - did not appear until about 100 million years later.

"That's when the modern katydids became ultrasonic," said Dr Zapata.

The researcher emphasised how lucky he and his team were to find this extraordinary fossil.

"This animal allows us to build a picture of the ecology of the Jurassic forest," he said, "and will give hints as to how other animals were singing at the time."

Prof Mike Ritchie from the University of St Andrews said it was surprising that "way back in early cricket time, they were already producing these very musical calls".

"People thought singing in crickets probably evolved later from a startle reflex," he told BBC Nature.

"But this suggests that [very early on] they were already... producing these lovely, pure tones to compete for a mate.

"If you think of Jurassic Park, we now know what it would have sounded like and it's different from what we expected; it's much more like today."
