Destiny Church declined for charter school

Destiny Church's bid to turn its south Auckland private school into a charter school has been knocked back.

The church has been trying to secure the right to open one of the Government's planned charter-type schools but on Tuesday, the church was advised by email that its bid had been unsuccessful.

Destiny Church says it had received good feedback on its "robust" proposal to become a charter school and is disappointed that the application has been declined.

"We've been in the process all year, and shaping up a robust proposal with all the other applications," church spokesman Richard Lewis told NZ Newswire.

"It's disappointing to get the news that it's been unsuccessful."

Referred to by the Government as partnership schools, the small number of charter-type state schools won't have to follow the New Zealand curriculum and will employ alternative ways of learning.

"The schools will have greater freedom and flexibility to innovate and engage their students," the partnership schools working group website says.

Destiny Church representatives were told they had been shortlisted from 35 down to a handful at an event in Wellington last month.

"We received feedback that it was an excellent application, they were impressed with it," Mr Lewis said.

The church has been given no reason for being declined.

Destiny School is based in the heart of south Auckland and currently enrols 80 percent Maori and 10 percent Pacific Islander students.

The school teaches a "unique Christian-based character curriculum".

"Our vision is to empower students to fulfill their God-given potential and destiny through character-based learning and academic excellence in education," the school's website says.

Mr Lewis said the outcome of the application won't have any bearing on the church's approach to teaching students at Destiny School.

New Zealand's first charter-type schools, to be opened by 2014, will be located in "areas of significant educational challenge and under-achievement".

Samsung Galaxy S4 Mini review: small in size, but not worth the mega price

Despite how the saying goes, bigger isn't always better -- and that's especially true in the mobile industry, where companies have produced smartphones with larger and larger screens. While that does seem to be the latest trend, a few manufacturers haven't forgotten that there are a ton of smartphone users out there who prefer using something that actually fits in the palm of their hand. Unfortunately, those folks don't have a flagship Android device to call their own, but Samsung is hopeful that its latest 4.3-inch beauty, the Galaxy S4 Mini, will at least suffice as a solid middle-tier option. But will shoppers be bothered by the fact that it lacks many of the top-end components we enjoy on devices like the Samsung GS4? Our friends at Negri Electronics, who are selling the device for $520, were kind enough to let us have some one-on-one time with the petite handset. Read on to get our take.

Antimalarial Drug Linked to Bales Massacre

U.S. Army Staff Sgt. Robert Bales, who is facing sentencing by a military court for killing 16 civilians on a rampage in Afghanistan last year, might have faced a perfect storm of stress, which included the use of mefloquine hydrochloride, an antimalarial drug given routinely to soldiers in that part of the world.

Mefloquine was developed by the U.S. military and has been used for more than three decades by the government to prevent and to treat malaria among soldiers and Peace Corps workers.

But the drug can cause varying neurological side effects 5 to 10 percent of the time, according to Dr. David Sullivan, an infectious disease specialist at Johns Hopkins Malaria Research Institute in Baltimore.

The manufacturer also warns against prescribing it to anyone who has suffered a seizure or brain injury, according to the drug label.

Bales told a military court he had "no good reason" to kill.

Now an adverse-event report from the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has emerged from March of 2012, written by an unidentified pharmacist, that cites a soldier-patient in the U.S. Army who "developed homicidal behavior and led to homicide killing 17 Afghanis."

Bales is not named in that anonymous report, which, if it refers to the same man, erroneously lists 17 dead, rather than 16.

A study of FDA adverse-event reports from 2004 to 2009 published in the journal PLOS One lists mefloquine as a drug that has been associated with violence toward others.

Sullivan said the military widely uses antimalarial drugs in Afghanistan, but mefloquine is not the first choice.

American Soldier Pleads Guilty to Afghan Massacre Watch Video

"Tens of millions of people take it," Sullivan said. "Honestly, you cannot implicate any one thing. To put it all on mefloquine is not fair. [Bales] already has a predisposition because of a traumatic brain injury and he has taken this drug in a stressful situation. You have to put it in context here. ? But you can't exclude it."

Bales, 39 and the father of two from Washington state, has admitted to the killings after he left of his remote outpost in the southern Afghan province of Kandahar to go on a shooting spree in two nearby villages. The pre-dawn attack left 16 villagers dead and six injured. Nine of those killed were children.

There is "not a good reason in the world" for the "horrible things" he did, Bales testified in a military court in June.

Bales suffered from head and foot injuries while deployed in Iraq and might have been traumatized by seeing one of his fellow soldiers lose a leg in an explosion hours before the killings, according to testimony.

By pleading guilty, he avoided the death penalty, but Bales still faces life imprisonment, with or without parole, at a sentencing trial set for next month.

According to the adverse-event report from the pharmacist, a man of "unknown demographics" had a history of traumatic brain injury with "no other medications of past drugs. ... this patient was administered mefloquine in direct contradiction to U.S. military rules that mefloquine should not be given to soldiers who had suffered TBI (Traumatic brain injury) due to its propensity to cross blood brain barriers inciting psychotic, homicidal or suicidal behavior."

FDA spokesman Stephanie Yao said the report was "authentic." She said anyone could submit such a report, so it is impossible to know who wrote it.

"These are voluntary reports," she said. "They are anonymous mainly because of the regulations protecting patient information, so names are not included.

"Adverse-event reports are one of the tools we use to monitor the safety of a drug after it is approved," she said. "We encourage people, whether it's a patient or health professional or manufacturer, to submit, so when we see a trend we can look into it in the future to see if there is a safety issue.

"In clinical testing, we use smaller populations and once drugs are approved they are used in a much wider population and we must continue to monitor safety."

Bales' lawyer, John Henry Browne, told the Seattle Times last week that he has documents indicating his client took mefloquine while in Iraq, but Bales' medical records in Afghanistan were incomplete.

"He [Bales] can't help us," Browne said. "He just says he took 'whatever they gave me.'"

Browne did not return a call from ABCNews.com, and the Seattle Times reported that he did not indicate whether he would cite use of mefloquine as a possible contributing factor to Bales' crimes at next month's sentencing.

According Time magazine, which first reported on the pharmacist's report, the initial summary eventually made its way to the FDA April 11.

Mefloquine, was first developed in the 1970s at the U.S. Department of Defense's Walter Reed Army Institute of Research as a synthetic analogue of quinine, the first effective treatment for malaria. It was licensed in 1989 by the FDA for use against chloroquine-resistant malaria.

High rice flats: Overcrowded China solves space shortage issues by building 187-metre-high vertical farms to grow fruit and veg

  • A network of huge 187-metre-high vertical farms would be used to grow vegetables and fruit
  • The skyscrapers would be constructed on the outskirts of big cities such as the Tai Po district in Hong Kong
  • China has seen much of its farmland disappear in recent years because of the rapid growth of its cities and industry

By Suzannah Hills

|

It's a difficult conundrum faced by many countries around the world - how to produce enough food for an ever-increasing population when land and space is rapidly running out.

But it appears China may have come up with an answer with its plans for space-saving vertical farms.

They may look more like tower accommodation blocks usually found in big cities, but these 187-metre-high skyscrapers would only be used to grow vegetables and fruit.

Because of China's limited space for farming, there are plans to create these vertical structures which provide food while saving land space

Because of China's limited room for farming, there are plans to create these imposing vertical structures which provide food while saving land space

The plans to build in the vertical farms in Tai Po, Hong Kong, come after the country's rapid urban expansion in recent years which has seen much of its usable farmland disappear.

?

Despite still having one of the largest agricultural outputs - feeding 20 per cent of the world's entire population, only 15 per cent of all its land is suitable for farming and only around 1.2 per cent permanently supports crops.

And with its cities expanding in size by ten per cent annually since 2000, its farmland is becoming increasingly under threat.

This coupled with the world's ever-expanding population has led to fears of future face food shortages action isn't taken soon.

Despite being state of the art, the towers are inspired by traditional Chinese rice farming's amazing shifting terraces

But Spain-based architectural firm JAPA believes its model could solve this problem with its Dyn-net or Dynamic Vertical Networks model.

This would be a series of high-rise towers located on the outskirts of cities that could supply the food needs of the metropolis.

The structures would be made out of lightweight yet high tensile materials using as many recyclable resources as possible.

The shifting floors of the structure, inspired by China's traditional rice farms, means each ring of the building can change its position to best suit the plants, such as making them receive the maximum amount of sunlight or moisture.

The farming towers will create more agricultural land by building upwards and using cutting-edge technology to grow as much produce as efficiently as possible

The system would also use hydroponics to grow produce, using little to no soil at all, and would even have labs to better monitor growth and nutritional value of the crops.

Visitors would be allowed into the building so they can learn more about local agriculture and get to witness the 360 degree panoramic views each platform offers.

The buildings could put an end to China?s difficulty in finding enough arable land to farm, which has been a problem throughout its history, leading to chronic food shortage.

Although China's agricultural output is the largest in the world, only about 15 per cent of its total land area can be cultivated enough to keep up with the population

Although China's agricultural output is the largest in the world, only about 15 per cent of its total land area can be cultivated enough to keep up with the population

While the production efficiency of its farmland has grown over time, efforts to expand to the west and the north have held limited success because of the colder and drier climate than its traditional farmlands to the east.

Since the 1950s, China's farm space has also been under pressure by the increasing land needs of industry and cities.

The company has suggested Tai Po District in Hong Kong which is the second largest administrative district and has a surrounding unused area of some 14,800 hectares in the northeast New Territories, as the idea site to test the farming skyscrapers.

The firm believes the structures would be able to feed the entire population of the surrounding Kowloon-Hong Kong area.

Japan PM's coalition gets majority in upper house -exit polls

TOKYO | Sun Jul 21, 2013 2:48pm BST

TOKYO (Reuters) - Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe's ruling bloc won a convincing victory in an upper house election on Sunday, media exit polls showed, giving the hawkish leader a mandate for his recipe to revive the economy, while ending a political deadlock and setting the stage for Japan's first stable government since 2006.

Abe, who returned to power after his Liberal Democratic Party-led coalition's big win in a December lower house poll, has said he will stay focused on fixing the economy with his "Abenomics" mix of hyper-easy monetary policy, fiscal spending and structural reforms.

But some business leaders and others with a stake in Japan's revival worry that Abe will weaken his resolve for reform in the face of a resurgent LDP, or shift to focus on the conservative agenda that has long been central to his ideology: revising the post-war pacifist constitution and recasting Tokyo's wartime history with a less apologetic tone.

Russia opposition leader freed on bail, protests rattle Kremlin

By Gabriela Baczynska

KIROV, Russia (Reuters) - Russia unexpectedly freed opposition leader Alexei Navalny on bail on Friday, bending to the will of thousands of protesters who denounced his five-year jail sentence as a crude attempt by President Vladimir Putin to silence him.

Putin's spokesman called the protesters "mobs" and warned that the rallies were illegal.

In a highly unusual ruling that points to Kremlin uncertainty over how to handle Navalny's case, a judge approved the prosecution request to free him pending his appeal so that he can run in a Moscow mayor election on September 8.

The anti-corruption blogger will be unable to leave Moscow but hailed the decision, a day after he was convicted of theft, as a victory for people power.

Experts said it was unprecedented for the prosecution to seek bail on such terms after sentencing.

"I am very grateful to all the people who supported us, all the people who went to (protest in Moscow's) Manezh Square and other squares," the 37-year-old said, rushing across the court to hug his wife after he was let out of a glass courtroom cage.

The judge's decision was greeted by applause in the court in Kirov, 900 km (550 miles) northeast of Moscow. Under Russian law, he has 10 days to file an appeal and then the court has to decide whether to hear that appeal in 30 days.

"We understand perfectly well what has happened now. It's an absolutely unique phenomenon in Russian justice," Navalny said.

People poured onto the streets of Russian cities to protest on Thursday evening after Navalny was convicted of stealing at least 16 million roubles ($494,000) from a timber firm when he was advising the Kirov regional governor in 2009.

More than 200 people were detained although the rallies were peaceful, with demonstrators chanting "Shame!", "Freedom!" and "Putin is a thief!"

In Moscow, drivers honked their horns in support as they drove past at least 3,000 demonstrators a few hundred meters from the Kremlin's red brick walls.

Navalny says his trial was politically motivated and intended to sideline him as a threat to Putin, even though his support is limited outside the cities and opinion polls show the president is still Russia's most popular politician.

Putin has not commented on the verdict against Navalny or his release from custody. Putin's spokesman, Dmitry Peskov, said the rallies were illegal because they were held without approval from the authorities.

"There is no doubt that it is impossible to condone such mobs, and one can only hope that in the future everything will be done within the framework of the law," Peskov told reporters.

The trial was a matter for the courts "and has nothing to do with the president," he said.

KREMLIN CONCERN

Navalny led anti-Putin protests in Moscow which attracted tens of thousands of people at their peak last year. But they did not take off in the provinces, Putin's traditional power base, and faded after the former KGB spy was elected to a six-year third term as president in March 2012.

The sight of protesters so close to the heart of power on Thursday may have unsettled the Kremlin, and Friday's bail decision could be a political maneuver to head off new protests that would worry investors.

The judge ruled that keeping him in detention put "him on an unequal footing against other candidates (in the mayoral election) and restricts his right to be elected".

The current mayor, Sergei Sobyanin, a close Putin ally, said he would prefer to be challenged by Navalny, who opinion polls show is trailing him by a long way.

A source close to the mayor said Sobyanin, who is tipped as a potential prime minister, was worried the removal of Navalny as a candidate would tarnish his expected victory.

Some analysts said the Kremlin, and the business and security community around it, looked divided over Navalny.

"There really is a split in the elite and it seems there will be no peaceful outcome," said political scientist Ella Paneyakh, who described the bail request by the state prosecution as unprecedented.

SPLITS IN THE KREMLIN?

Putin is under no immediate political threat from Navalny, or any other opposition figure, but his grip on power has long depended on maintaining calm and a balance of forces between the conservatives and more liberal forces around him.

Cracks in the facade of unity have appeared, particularly over the removal from government of Vladislav Surkov, Putin's former political strategist, in May. Surkov had fallen foul of more hawkish Kremlin allies who are in the ascendancy as Putin takes a tough line against opponents after last year's protests.

"I think the split at the top of the Kremlin pyramid has now become absolutely obvious," said Alexei Roshchin, a veteran campaign adviser and sociologist.

"Before our very eyes the Navalny case is acting as a catalyst for the split in the elites."

Members of the Kremlin human rights council on Friday supported calls for an independent review of the case against Navalny, the Interfax news agency cited the advisory body's head, Mikhail Fedotov, as saying.

The United States and European Union voiced concern over Navalny's conviction, saying it raised questions about the rule of law and Russia's treatment of Putin's opponents.

"The fact that they were released under specific conditions is something that we can welcome, but how the whole case has been handled simply underlines our concerns," a spokeswoman for EU foreign policy chief Catherine Ashton said.

While it makes it easier for him to stay in the mayoral race, there is no indication Navalny's release from custody will affect the court's ruling on his planned appeal.

The acquittal rate in Russia is about half a percent, or one in 200, and has declined in recent years, said Pavel Chikov, a human rights lawyer and head of legal rights group Agora.

Union Pacific Railroad crossing closures set for Tehama County

Five railroad crossings in Tehama County will be closed to vehicular traffic in the coming weeks, including this location at San Benito Avenue in Gerber. ( DN/Rich Greene )

A series of Union Pacific Railroad projects will close roads for 2-day periods in five separate spots across Tehama County beginning Monday, July 22.

The closures affect the railroad crossings at 5th Street (July 22-23) in Tehama, Gerber Road (July 29-30) and San Benito Avenue (Aug. 5-6) in Gerber and Hooker Creek (Aug. 5-6) and Bowman (Aug. 7-8) roads in Cottonwood.

The roads will be closed to all vehicular traffic at 8 a.m. the first day and are scheduled to reopen at 5 p.m. the second day of work.

Tehama County Public Works received a request from Union Pacific in June, notifying the county of the work.

Dates were chosen to avoid conflicting with the first week of school of Evergreen School District in the Cottonwood area.

Public Works Director Gary Antone said his department is working to get the message out as best as possible so drivers know to avoid the areas on the designated work days.

There's a lot of inconvenience that's going to be there, he told the Tehama County Board of Supervisors Tuesday.

During the Bowman Road closure the alternative route using Hooker Creek Road will create a roughly 14-mile detour.

Because of the nature of the work, emergency vehicles will not be able to cross either.

Each project will involve Union Pacific installing a protective barrier across the roadway at the edge of the work zone.

Union Pacific will install new track structure and reinstall concrete crossing pads.

The county is responsible for the road closures and patching new approaches to the crossings.

Union Pacific will also be reconstructing crossings within the city of Red Bluff.

No schedule has been announced for that work yet.

The county worked with Union Pacific on a series of similar projects in 2009.

The county accounted for all labor, equipment and materials and provided a bill to Union Pacific for the work.

Antone said Union Pacific ignored the bill.

UPPR's stance was and continues to be that the railroad is responsible for the tracks and everything else in the road is the county's responsibility,' a staff report reads.

Despite the past, the board authorized the Public Works Director to pursue reimbursement from Union Pacific for the project.

Israel going ahead with hotels on historic cemetery

Ma'man Allah CemetryMaariv newspaper has revealed that the Israeli-run Jerusalem municipality has started to develop plans for tourist hotels and related facilities on parts of the historic Ma'man Allah Cemetery in the holy city. The hotels and buildings are to be built in the south-central section of the cemetery, opposite the so-called Museum of Tolerance, which is also being built in the cemetery.

The newspaper noted that the municipality Finance Committee has allocated around $75,000 for the planning of the project, in cooperation with an Israeli company.

In response, Al-Aqsa Foundation for Religious Endowments and Heritage has issued a warning about the scheme which, it insists, is a flagrant violation of the sanctity of the deceased. "This is also a serious violation of the feelings of Muslims all over the world," said the foundation, "and a continuation of the crimes of the Israeli establishment in the largest and oldest Muslim cemetery in Palestine." The Israeli authorities have already dug up hundreds of graves in order to build schools and playgrounds on the site.

The foundation explained that the Israeli Ministry of Justice recently cancelled plans to build new courts on the same site. A local and international campaign has been launched by Al-Aqsa Foundation against Israel's plans for the cemetery; there are at least 8 new projects planned.

Google Expected to Release New Nexus 7 Tablet, Android 4.3 Next Week

Google's green robot has something brewing, and signs point to it being an improved Nexus 7 tablet and an updated version of the Android operating system.

Technology website Android Central has gotten what is allegedly the first images of the refreshed 7-inch tablet, which appears to have a slightly different black design, two cameras and a faster Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro processor. The model was also running a new version of Android 4.3.

It also looks like you won't have to wait too long to buy the tablet. Retailers, including Office Max, are expected to get the new tablet in the next week. According to Engadget, which first reported on the retailer stock, the 32GB model will cost $269.99. The current 16GB version of the Nexus 7 starts at $199.

When reached by ABC News, Google would not comment on the reports. However, on Wednesday, Google sent members of the media invites to a company event next Wednesday, July 24. "Please join us for breakfast with Sundar Pichai," the invite reads.

Google Puts Its Own Spin on the Galaxy S4 and HTC One

Pichai is the head of the Android and Chrome divisions at Google. While there has been little Chrome OS speculation, Pichai is likely to talk about the browser-based operating system in addition to Android.

Google released the original Nexus 7 last June at its Google I/O event and it quickly became one of the best-selling tablets at $199. Months later Apple released the similarly-sized iPad Mini for a $329 starting price. It's closest rival, the $199 Amazon Kindle Fire HD, is also expected to be updated this fall ahead of the holiday season.

ABC News will be covering the Google event July 24 at 9 a.m. PT / 12:00 p.m. ET.

Icahn renews call to defeat Dell buyout offer as vote looms

(Reuters) - Billionaire activist Carl Icahn renewed his call for Dell Inc stockholders to vote against a buyout offer from Michael Dell, amid reports that the company founder might not win enough support for his bid.

Dell shareholders are scheduled to vote Thursday on a plan laid out by Michael Dell and private equity firm Silver Lake to take the No. 3 PC maker private in a $24.4 billion deal.

However, Dell may decide to delay the vote to gain time to win support for the deal, a person familiar with the matter said on Tuesday.

In an open letter to shareholders on Wednesday, Icahn said Dell's special committee must allow a final vote to be completed on July 18, and not try to postpone the vote to a later date.

Icahn and Southeastern Asset Management oppose the offer, arguing that a $13.65 share offer "substantially" undervalues the company.

Michael Dell and Silver Lake would not raise their offer even if a vote on their offer were delayed, two people familiar with the matter said on Tuesday.

Dell shares were down 1.4 percent at $12.83.

Heat blankets much of US as summer sizzles

NEW YORK (AP) ? From South Dakota to Massachusetts temperatures surged to potentially dangerous levels Wednesday as the largest heat wave of the summer stretched out and stagnated, with relief in many parts of the country still days away.

Most states in the U.S. had at least one region where the temperature hit 90 degrees, according to the National Weather Service, though the worst heat was in the Midwest to Northeast. Humid air just made it all feel worse, with heat indexes in some places over 100.

In New York City, where it was 96 degrees, sidewalk food vendor Ahmad Qayumi said that by 11 a.m., the cramped space inside his steel-walled cart got so hot, he had to turn off his grill and coffee machine.

"It was just too hot. I couldn't breathe," he said, turning away a customer who asked for a hamburger. "Just cold drinks," he said.

Amid the heat, officials in Washington D.C.'s Maryland suburbs worked to keep a failing water main from cutting off hundreds of thousands of people, just when they needed it most. People in Prince George's County were asked not to run their faucets, water their lawns or flush toilets to keep the water system from emptying during emergency repairs.

Firefighters in southern California faced brutally hot ? but dangerously dry ? conditions as they battled a wildfire outside Palm Springs. Temperatures could go as high as 105 and humidity could go as low as 1 percent by the afternoon, said Tina Rose, a spokesman for the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection. The fire has already consumed seven homes.

It was hot enough to buckle highway pavement in several states. Firefighters in Indianapolis evacuated 300 people from a senior living community after a power outage knocked out the air conditioning. The state of Illinois opened cooling centers. The Environmental Protection Agency said the heat was contributing to air pollution in New England.

At the World Trade Center reconstruction site in New York City, workers building a rail hub dripped under their hardhats, thick gloves and heavy-duty boots. Some wore towels around their necks to wipe away the sweat.

"We're drinking a lot of water, down under by the tracks, in and out of the sun all day ? very hot," said carpenter Elizabeth Fontanez, of the Bronx, who labored with 20 pounds of tools and safety equipment strapped to her waist. Since the heat wave began, she said she has been changing shirts several times during her shifts.

Officials blamed hot weather for at least one death. A 78-year-old Alzheimer's patient died of heat exhaustion after wandering away from his northern Kentucky home Tuesday in temperatures that rose to 93 degrees.

Limited relief, in the form of a cold front, was expected to begin dropping south from Canada starting Thursday, before sweeping through the Midwest and into the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast regions by Saturday. That will bring lower temperatures, but also possibly severe thunderstorms, said weather service spokesman Christopher Vaccaro.

New Mexico and parts of Texas turned out to be rare outposts of cool air Wednesday ? but not without trouble of their own: heavy rains prompted flood watches and warnings in some areas. More than five inches of rain fell in 24 hours in Plainview, north of Lubbock, according to the National Weather Service.

T-Mobile and AT&T: JUMP to your Next phone purchase ? or don't

    AT&T and T-Mobile SIM cards

One is another option to buy a device, the other is giving the carrier more money for no good reason

We've seen a big couple of days in the mobile space. Following T-Mobile's announcement of its "boldest moves" last week that included a new way to upgrade your phone more often, AT&T announced today that it has launched its own device financing and upgrade scheme. "AT&T Next", as it is called, gives you another option to buy a phone outright on the carrier by paying the unsubsidized price spread out over 20 monthly payments. Similarly, T-Mobile's newly-announced JUMP! upgrade service lets users build on its device financing service to also allow returning of a device twice a year for a new handset with a monthly fee.

Both of these plans are new ways for you (and the carriers) to think about the device purchasing agreement, but that doesn't mean they're created equal. Let's do some (simple) math after the break.

R&B singer shoved after Trayvon Martin dedication

HAYWARD, Calif. (AP) ? R&B singer Lester Chambers is recovering from injuries he suffered after a woman leaped onto the stage and shoved him when he dedicated a song to Trayvon Martin during a concert in the San Francisco Bay Area, a newspaper reported Monday.

Lester Chambers ? a member of the Chambers Brothers, best known for their 1968 hit "Time Has Come Today" ? had a bruised rib muscle and nerve damage after he was attacked Saturday at the Hayward Russell City Blues Festival, family members told The San Jose Mercury News (http://bit.ly/12uRHLF).

Chambers dedicated the Curtis Mayfield hit "People Get Ready" to the slain Florida teen, the newspaper reported.

Witnesses said 43-year-old Dinalynn Andrews Potter of Barstow yelled "it's all your fault" before shoving 73-year-old Chambers.

"She must have been an acrobat," Lola Chambers, Lester Chambers' wife, told the Mercury News. "She did it in one leap. He didn't see her coming."

Andrews Potter was arrested on suspicion of battery, cited and released.

George Zimmerman, who identifies himself as Hispanic, was found not guilty of second-degree murder in last year's death of Martin, who was black. The jury had the option to consider manslaughter but declined to convict him of the lesser charge.

The case prompted debate nationwide over racial profiling, self-defense and equal justice. Zimmerman was acquitted Saturday.

Chambers' family wants police to file hate crime charges. Andrews Potter is white, they said. Chambers is black.

Hayward Police did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

The Cats' House in San Diego closes, cats go east

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? They enjoyed the high life for years. Now eight cats accustomed to the creature comforts of a house that features an elevated feline freeway have not only been brought down to Earth, but squeezed into a 30-foot motorhome with the family Chihuahua.

Gus, Sam, Dave, Stella, Lili, Eddie, Zander, Willow and Sadie the Chihuahua are biding their time in the motorhome, which is parked in the driveway of the San Diego home known for a quarter century as "The Cats' House."

Bob Walker and Frances Mooney have sold the house. Escrow closed on July 3 and before the month is over, Walker, Mooney, cats and dog are moving to Fredericksburg, Va.

Walker and Mooney moved into the house in 1986 and turned it into a human-sized cat condo with 140 feet of elevated highway, tunnels, ramps, a spiral staircase, rest areas and scenic vistas. It even had a floor-to-ceiling scratching post.

The kitty thoroughfare remains but has been painted white like the rest of the house. The new owners don't have a cat.

It used to be a kaleidoscope of colors. Even the outside was purple.

Walker, 63, a photographer and builder, and Mooney, 61, an artist, shared the house.

Walker published eight photo books, including "The Cats' House." Over the years, the unusual home attracted over 50 film crews from around the world. At a book signing in 1996, more than 900 people showed up.

The couple was featured in a Chris Smith documentary, "Home Movie" shown at the 2001 Sundance Film Festival and later released on DVD.

Walker, Mooney and the cats even had a line of postcards at Target.

Until five months ago, Walker said they thought they'd spend the rest of their lives in the four-bedroom, 1,500-square-foot home overlooking Mission Bay. Built in the 1950s, it was also Mooney's childhood home.

"Then we decided to go on a new adventure and move to the East Coast," Walker said.

Sadie, Zander and Willow are 3, so this will probably be the couple's last batch of cats, he said. Cats are 15- or 20-year commitments and they don't want to leave any behind.

Mooney "was always bonkers for cats," Walker said. On their wedding day in 1973, they adopted Beauregard, their first cat as a couple.

The ceiling superhighway started when they decided to divide the living room and dining room with a stained glass window. To keep cats from damaging the furniture, they added the floor-to-ceiling scratching post, wrapped with 395 feet of dyed pink sisal rope.

The cats loved it, Walker said, but after chasing each other up the scratching post and across a suspended beam, they had to stop abruptly.

The answer was tunnels and freeway extensions. Walker used 2-by-6 inch planks of Douglas fir. To accommodate the oldest members of the troupe, he added the 23-step spiral staircase into the TV room and a carpet-covered ramp into the bedroom.

Over the years, they've had 35 cats, though never more than a dozen at once.

They had eight litter boxes around the house and cleaned a lot, Walker said. In the motorhome, they don't have as much to clean, but there is only room for one litter box ? on the shower floor ? and they have to change it at least twice a day.

In Fredericksburg, they plan to buy a home and build a bigger, better, longer, stronger and more artistic catwalk.

Walker said he's anxious to start on a two-story cat house, but he's a little worried about the slope challenge.
