City Council president's staff walks out

New Orleans City Council President Jackie Clarkson's staff had enough.

Unhappy with their boss, Clarkson's staff didn't show up for work?Friday?and left her alone at City Hall.

"Sure I work everybody too hard, I work myself too hard. I won't change," Clarkson said.

Clarkson wasn't surprised when her five staffers told her?Thursday?they would not be at work?Friday.

"They let me know they were leaving, and it was all very respectful," Clarkson said. "They just told me they were leaving. I said, 'Fine.'"

She said the office tension started during Thursday's council meeting as she called out orders to several staffers in council chambers.

"I had too many things on the agenda, on my agenda, for the day with what I was doing with the council meeting and trying to just give orders while I was trying to run a meeting, instead of maybe more nicely asking people to do things," Clarkson said. "But that happens, and it won't change."

On Friday, the staff collectively took a day off, which Clarkson said didn't stop her work.?Clark on attended funeral services for Officer Rodney Thomas, who was killed during a hit-and-run accident?Sunday. Then she said she visited several New Orleans Recreation Department facilities. By afternoon, a staff member from the council's Research Division was taking her calls.

"I ?went into the office for a while and got everything that needed to be done, done and the two calls that I got were offering to help me, so nothing was left undone at all," Clarkson said.

Clarkson added she pushes herself and her staff to the limit because she has a plenty of work to do before leaving office next year.
