Sony Mobile to lay off 1,000 workers, relocate headquarters to Tokyo

Sony Mobile will reduce its workforce and relocate its base of operations from Lund, Sweden to Tokyo, Japan. The company, formerly known as Sony Ericsson, has announced plans will lay off 1,000 workers, about 15 percent of its workforce and consultants, and focus its efforts in Japan as a way to boost productivity.

Sony says that the restructuring measures are designed to make the company more efficient. Sony has struggled to gain market share from rivals Apple and Samsung, and it has been slow to release new products and firmware updates to its Xperia smartphones. Moving operations will reduce costs and decrease the amount of time it takes for Sony to deliver new products.

Around 650 of the 1,000 job cuts will come from employees and consultants at Sony's office in Lund. Some staff will remain to focus on software development, but the majority of workers will be laid off. Sony expects layoffs to continue until March 2014.
